A-List Birthday Sidebar January 30, 2001 6:05 AM   Subscribe

From metafilter "sideblog" under Tuesday:

(all a-listers with birthdays will be mentioned here)

What is this about? There's nowhere to put my birthday when I click on "customize" so I can't help but conclude this is a service only tailored to an elite cadre of metafilter users. But what should I expect ... I've never been on an "a-list" in my life.

Yeah Matt, stop having fun with your page!

You can be on my a-list, Courtney.

I laughed out loud when I read the sidebar this morning. I only feel for those poor a-listers without birthdays.

metafilter is not a democracy. long live elitism.

You're in an even better club, croutonsupafreak -- the anti-elite.

do other people have birthdays?

I was born with one, sadly. The PC term is anniversarily-challenged.

A-listers can have their birthdays on the sidebar. Those of us "and-sometimes-Y"-listers will all get together and raise a glass in a real bar, thankyouverymuch. First round's on me!

Brad, you are an a-lister.

well, when his birthday rolls around, he can find out if he is or not.

it's really more of an information service than anything else.

I have created a CSS sidebar in which I will happily announce all B-lister birthdays.

Unfortunately, the sidebar has no web site to be attatched to. I hope it's okay if I just store it as a BBEdit file on my hard drive.

I vote for all listers to get a special birthday section. Like "Click here to see today's other MetaFilter birthdays >".

And my birthday's coming up soon, so let's get it up, toot sweet... (just kidding, but it would be nice).

Plus we get a little cake icon next to our name when we post...ok, maybe that's a little ridiculous.

Why don't we change the requirements for birthday notification... you get linked if you've ever eaten a calamondin?

... you get linked if you've ever eaten a calamondin?

You leave my personal life out of this.

I'd just like to point out that my birthday is June 14th (also Flag Day, for all you patriotic people out there), leaving you over 4 months to choose the perfect present for me. Note that this year is the big two-one, so I'll expect you to all give appropriately. I mention this here because the chances of me being featured on the sidebar are nil, so I might as well make note of my birthday to the 10 people who actually read metatalk :)

a-listers? is that where this is all headed? i know this is all run by one guy (matt) and he gets to do whatever he wants and that's fine and he can have a clique & that's fine too. but then it's not so much of a community then is it?

Oh, for pete sake, folks, lighten up. There's not yet an emoticon to indicate "tongue in cheek", so you'll have to do some of the work yourselves.

;) usually works, optamystic. Although a-listers like Matt probably think they are above emoticons.

I hereby grant all metafilterites unrestricted use of my Sardonicon:

:>

[A variation--- ;> ---is available for when one is feeling particularly feisty.]

For "tongue in cheek" I've seen this---> :^)
(though it may be more applicable for "snowman")
posted by Avogadro at 10:42 AM on February 1, 2001

Sapphireblue, you probably think of the word feisty the way I once did.

hmm ... reading the thread about the fate of Blogger/Pyra makes me think I'm not worthy of the a-list anyhow. It takes too much work, and I think you have to live on the west coast. So I take it back. Sorry.

Hey Matt... when you get all the way down to the "Z" list, I can put my birthday down... KEWL!
posted by EricBrooksDotCom at 8:55 PM on February 1, 2001

you fucking a-listers.

I love the word "Sardonicon". I just said it like ten times. Make that twenty...
posted by Optamystic at 12:52 AM on February 2, 2001

Matt, you probably forgot to ask me for my bithday: August 24th. No problem, though.
posted by tranquileye at 4:21 AM on February 23, 2001

Couple of comments: The "A List" comment was humorous, and -- from what I know of Matt from hanging around here -- it was completely tongue-in-cheek.

Aside from that: What a coincidence! August 24th is my birthday too! Crazy.

Do A-listers get "official" birthdays, like the Queen and racehorses?
