Talkin' 'Bout My G-G-G-Generation

The 10K Generation, to which I belong, being member 10947 of September 3, joined MetaFilter between August 1 and September 5 2001, just before the 9/11 influx, and is currently enjoying its second anniversary here. Does each generation, according to how and when they joined, have its own personality? Mine, I would say, judging by a quick survey, is moody, quiet and difficult. What's yours like?

Maybe it has something to do with how logins were managed in each generation? I lurked through months and months of disabled logins before finally begging for an account. I've sensed that some 14kers have a sense of entitlement (or maybe investment) because they made donations. Otherwise, I don't really have a good feel for my generation.

I like to think us 16K'ers (and low 17'ers!) are enlightened enough to care little about the whole user-number-snobbery thing. And we will firmly remain so until some newbies come along to feel superior to.

(Except of course that user #16684. He's a facile jerk who's nowhere near as funny as he thinks he is. But 16683 and below, and 16885 and above? Golden, baby.)

For all this talk of the pent up desire built by the long lockdown on user accounts leading to such fantastic contributors among the 14K group, I wonder how many of the 1000 accounts between 14K & 14,999 are still in use on a regular (let's say post a comment more than once every two months) basis. It seems like 14K is heavily represented among the active user base, but then again, that's a thousand people we're talking about, and only maybe 50 or at most 100 of them are really using those memberships.

It seems like 14K is heavily represented among the active user base, but then again, that's a thousand people we're talking about, and only maybe 50 or at most 100 of them are really using those memberships.

Given that there are probably fewer than 200 currently active posters, that's a pretty big proportion.

9k here, don't know any others, not all that chatty myself. I managed to rouse myself to comment today because I think most of my generation came bashing through the doors on the heels of Kaycee Nicole.

New user signups were off and I think I remember the front page being mostly static unless you were logged in. Someone slipped in MeTa and mentioned new users were still getting in by signing up for accounts at another of Matt's sites. Off I went, and here I am. Happy.

The 11K group are all loud, obnoxious drunks. They tend to have oversized genitalia and are not shy about sharing them with others. When poked with a stick, the 11K group withdraws into a shell constructed of pork rinds, and foments plans for retaliation that seldom amount to anything more than heaving feces thither and yon. 11K'ers are prone to ingrown toenails, post-nasal drip, and, in the case of the females, raging yeast infections.

And before we 14k-ers go getting uppity, it's worth remembering that one of the more spectacular flameouts in recent memory was one of ours. Although the user in question was somewhat "new" at the time.

Makes me wonder what kind of fireworks we'll get if Matt ever opens the door again.

The 14k generation does seem to be more active than other brackets, even after 12 months or so. This could be because most of them had to actually go through some sort of trial to get here (either by dollars or by break-and-enter), so have more invested in their membership. I imagine that there were a lot of potential members who wandered off into the wilderness during that time because they did not have the fortitude to keep trying.

To ensure that any future new members have the same level of investment, we should insist on some sort of ritual shaming for potential newbies in future.

I know im a high number. I got here just after 9/11 and didnt even get an account until much later. Ive had my moments of stupidity, and my moments of feigned intellect. I was kicked once for being fucked up (drunk, bad stuff happened) and I apologized and got back in. So I guess if you were to take me and generalize my generation, I guess you could call us the upwardly mobile gets drunk and spews wild shit sort of members.

I was one of 33 Mefites to sign up on 4 September 2001 (10966-10998). It's not the most exciting cohort in the world, I have to admit - only a handful of us have even commented in the last six months, two of us only became members to comment once that same day and then promptly disappeared forever, and maybe 20 or so members from that day never posted or commented on anything. Some of them don't even have contact info or websites - they are complete and total ciphers. I can only assume they became members after that long dry spell when Matt's server was overwhelmed, to hedge against another members-only access period. So, perhaps we 9/4/2001 people can be characterized as quiet, mysterious, and opportunistic.

And of course, 4 September 2001 is the day that mefi joined MeFi.

12kers enjoy flash fridays, walks along the beach, the movies, mac news, the underdogs, personal creativity, whimsy, quippage, midori snyder, madamejujujive, plep, and mefite high drama dummy spits.

12kers wonder why the ideal of "self policing" is so hard to attain and follow by the other generations, who often blame bad performances on alcohol (nice crutch that it is) and those unruly, uncontrollable "emotions" of theirs.

12kers are quiet because adding to the noise would be irresponsible and total anathema to their maturity and majesty.

I think the character of MeFi has shifted subtly over the years and "generations" of members.

I'd break it down like this:

0-3K
Very short FPP with a link to an interesting non-news site. Not many comments, if any.

3K-10K
The Golden Age. FPP growing longer. Intriguing posts, insightful discussion, and comments that add perspective make it a best-of-class site.

10K-14K
More personalized posts (ex. I really like this type of band, and if you do, you can learn more on this site.) Noise level increases faster than signal.

14K-present
NewsFilter and the rise of the alpha-posters. FPP becomes increasingly breaking news-oriented. One-liners and "chatter" dominate the comments.

Here's an exercise I've been meaning to suggest for a few weeks now. Especially apropos for us anciens, but perhaps useful for others.

Take a look at the posts on Metafilter the day or two around when you joined.

Me, I signed up on December 21, 2000. I was visiting my sweetie's house in Minnesota (sssh, don't tell her). On that day, there were 15 posts on the front page (random side note: please do fucking not call them FPPs), by 12 different members. An archaeology site, the trailer sites for Traffic and Memento, Jenna Bush, Bonsai Kitten, hemp, three news stories, an obituary thread for a musician, Santa Tracking, and a couple of linkylinks from /usr/bin/girl and mister pants.

It's the variety that did it for me. I remember very clearly, sitting in her kitchen, thinking, "My god. Together we can cover anything. Together we know everything."

I don't think I believe that anymore. It makes me very sad.

I wish that a simple touch of espionage had been all I needed to sign up. Competition among those who wanted one of the limited spots was bloodthirsty. You have no idea how many routers I had programmed to fail at noon to prevent my rivals from signing up. Those were long, long days that summer: five minutes spent trying to register, and twenty-three hours fifty-five minutes spent trying to prevent others from registering the next day.

Finally, at high noon on the first of August, with the entire world incapacitated thanks to my efforts, it came down to myself, a co-worker, and a fifty-metre dash to the nearest workstation.

Thank God he tripped.

Funny thing. I walked right into MetaFilter one day, got one of the 10 free signups, and all was right.

I've actually thought of auctioning off my MeFi name on ebay. It's a pretty generic nickname that anyone could take over, although I'm a bit attached to the nick, and I guess I do use it on slashdot, too.... still, for 5 figures, I think I could part with it.

I am one of the last active regular >200's (I'm 131) I think...
I think most of the >200's are mostly silent now, their accounts rusting over, silent, perhaps never to be used again.

Back then in 1999 and 2000, it was all weblog talk, who was doing what, why they were doing it, what sucked, who sucked and why they sucked. One thread that springs to mind is the one where Srini Mumar of unAmerican.com threw a kitten out of a window. Hmmm.
