This question about the posited decline and fall of aliens in film might be worth addressing here...

I think it's a little too chatty and not quite informational enough for AxMe, though I can see others tolerance for the chatty/conversational differs a bit from mine. Still, I'm not even sure it falls into the viewpoint-as-information category that I've seen as the saving grace of some less informational AxMe posts.

Also, this does seem to me to fit in the blue. Posts like this one (which I thought was great) are similarly about an observation, with one or two referenced observation links....

I think it's a great topic for MetaFilter where all the Men are from Mars* and all the Women are from Venus and all the children are above average.

*except for a few who are from Uranus. Heh. Heh. Heh.

Too chatty for Asmketown, too much of a question for MefiTown... what to do what to do

Post about it in the grey, obviously.

MetaTalk: Discussion for the sake of discussion.

I don't think it is worthy of either MeFi or AskMe. The only links are to imdb.

What mischief said. The other thread you cited, though chatty, had links to actual information about how people dream. This is pure "hey, gang, let's all shoot the shit" crapola.

Exterminate!

languagehat, you are sorely mistaken! The thread in question had actual links to a mother fucking database of information. If all users were compelled to search far and wide for such places of data amalgamation, the end game would be stayed another decade at least.

Also, quonsar makes an excellent point, but it raises another question: bla-bla-a-a-bla. smock. bla-a-bla. smocksmock?

Eh. I'm converted. It probably doesn't belong on MeFi as is.

(Smart Dalek, how long have you been saving that up? :)

But...

The thing is, this is the sort of topic I would find interesting if someone had written an article about it. The poster may have been the only person to think about it to this point, and if he'd written an article, he couldn't have posted.

In that way, it's like the "dreams of tooth loss" thing. Interesting thought, minimal support, might never have hit MeFi if the poster had actually written about it in an article...

Clearly, the solution is a new area of metafilter -- MeMe. Self link to your heart's content. It will be black. With black type. And little black links and buttons labelled in black on a black background, with black mouseovers to let you know every time you've done something.

"Clearly, the solution is a new area of metafilter"

Sounds like that's what #mefi turned into a few months after I stopped showing up.

The main issue I had was that the post linked to IMDB - surely EVERYONE knows about IMDB??

First of all, you'd think the 50+ solid hours on that Alien DVD box set should be more than enough for 2003. As to the post's question, the answer's too obvious: above all, keep in mind that M. Night Shyamalan made extraterrestrials uncool with that Signs flick. E.T.'s DVD release wasn't all that successful either. So basically aliens are out except for the Quadrilogy thing. But that's beside the point: this is not a Trekkie Convention. Personally, I simply think the post should have been abducted.

I'll just mention kuro5hin as a site that runs sort of like that.

I propose that the next person who refers to AskMe as AxMe be disemboweled with a rusty spoon.
