Wiki April Fool's prank. April 1, 2004 10:33 AM   Subscribe

Ok, funs over, the wiki code was totally killing the box. I just might keep it up for shits and giggles at a different location.

That comments.metawiki is not working.

And what of the official wiki? Will we now have a "work" wiki and a "play" wiki?

Sigh, I still blame only myself. Heh.

So… what's killing the box now, then?

Thanks, Matt. That was one of your all-time good pranks but I'm glad that MeFi is its normal self again. Also, it was an interesting experience in social engineering, if you will. Now all the folks that wanted to be the secret MeFi cadre of editors have had a chance to see what would happen if they were allowed to have their way. I like MeFi better this way. I also appreciate the new coloring on the Google ads, as they are much less intrusive. Thanks again!

I don't believe in hijinx, mischeif, shenanigans or tomfoolery of any sort.

Good thing I was spared.

Next great April Fool's joke: MeFi goes entire day without page timing out.
posted by soyjoy at 2:10 PM on April 1, 2004

oh, is *that* what was going on with the front page? I just saw a huge pages-long account of some goings-on in the Russian court and figured it was an abstract joke only Matt actually understood...

*scratches head, wondering what all the fuss was about*

Damn stupid international date line*

Matt, you really suck. you edited your post to eliminate the location.

Can anyone else edit their posts, huh ??? Noooooooo.

April fool.

I hope there will be an archive of the day's fun. The last thing I saw was "Please read the RULES before contributing" followed by a hilarious "Koizume commands it" edit with a weird picture of Japan's PM. with glowing eyes.

It scared me, and I felt sad.

Can we see the static version of it please?
posted by riffola at 3:04 PM on April 1, 2004

there's no static version of it, it's all from the database and it's pretty crappy code. I'll see if I can get it running fully cached so it's not too bad on the server.

Someone just sent me this as a good summation of the wiki madness.

Conrad wrote a good summation of the wiki madness, too.

April Fool's day is awesome, though.. I do quite enjoy that it's the one holiday that the internet seems to celebrate the most widely and ingeniously.

It was hilarious! LOL! THX MATT OMG!

that was kinda fun, matt - but a little anarchy goes a long way. I was so glad it didn't last all day.

Oddly enough, when MeFi is totally down, I am able to somehow cope with the withdrawal. But when it's kinda sorta up, but it just won't behave the way it damn well should, that triggered facial tics, I tell ya.
