Hatemail from MeFi. June 2, 2001 12:16 AM   Subscribe

I feel so darn tootin' speshul -- I just recieved my first MeFi hate mail, anonymous or otherwise! Do I get a prize?

Should I be commending perogi for at least signing the email? Or are hate mailers still cowards for not spewing publicly on MeFi or MeTa?

who's forcing him to visit?

This is the second time he’s made front page post without actually posting anything. This guy is having personal problems and is inflicting it on the whole of MetaFilter.

Bad form.

bad form indeed. Perogi, if that post belonged anywhere, it's here in MetaTalk. Please consider that option next time you want to make a statement about the site.

That is so lame, perogi.

I've informed perogi by email that we are discussing him in this thread.
posted by lagado at 6:44 AM on June 2, 2001

blah. informing him of anything is just giving him the attention he wants. he'll eventually go away or he'll finally piss off Matt enough to get himself banned. same as the other trolls we've had the pleasure of enduring, this too shall pass.

Perogi has made some good comments in the past; he's not ordinarily a flamebaiter. That being said, the post in question, and the email that followed, is psychologically bizarre. I can only imagine he was having a cruddy day and wanted to pass some pain around. Extremely bad form.

aww, i've never gotten any hate email from mefi! though i did recently receive an email where someone called me "sister." how did that happen? oh, wait, you're probably going to say the pink lipstick aren't you. fine.

Yeah, you know maybe he's having a bad weekend. Though I find that for someone who wanted everyone else to stay away from MeFi [and I am reporting in here from dial-up land, so I'm always away for some length of time] he's been managing to post chime-in and/or "here's the way it works" comments ["good post, well done" "yawners" "I'm going to bed" etc] quite a bit. Name calling is lame.

Posting personal email correspondance to a public forum without permission of the author (I'm assuming that lia didn't have permission) isn't good either.

I think you lose your right to keep personal correspondance private when you flame.

I disagree. I might have done the same thing, but J-Ko (if I may call you that) has a good point. Unilaterally deciding that someone "loses their right" to something is bogus. We need to be civil here, despite what others may do (a lesson I'm learning well these days). Lia should have either described the email without quoting it, or left out the sender's name, or something.

The addresse owns all correspondence after it is received, not the sender. It is up to that person what should be done with it, and I’m not about to impugn anyone for publishing some inconsquential correspondence that started out private.

It may be polite to ask for permission to publish letters, but by no means unethical, especially in this case. If it contained some damning information in it, then she’d have a problem. But this is thing is just hate mongering. I’m glad he was outed.

Unless you encrypt your email it is quite public. It passes through tons of machines. I never expect email to be private. Just because it ends with mail doesn't mean it holds the same privilages of its snail namesake. That's why employers can read your email. That's why anyone on the many computers your email bounces off of can read it too.

Of course, when you are having an intimate conversation with a friend it is rude to post those messages. You either trust that person won't, use a different method, or simply refrain from confessing your strange fascination with goats.

Lia seems to make friends everywhere she goes, I see. I think posting the E-Mail (IP addy and all) is in pretty poor taste. Legal or not.

I simply chose to skip the Waste of bandwidth post in question. If Pierogi wants attention to the point of being a nuisance... why entertain his wishes with yet another thread?

My issue was only with Lia's actions, not with her personally. I happen to enjoy Lia's presence here at MeFi very much. Her perspective is unique and I value it highly.

There's that great argument over who owns a love letter after the affair ends: the sender or the recipient? Same could apply to flame mail.

If you're going to flame someone, you should be prepared to have your words thrown back at you. There are times when taking it to email is simply cowardice, just as there are times when publishing private mail is inappropriate.

Don't get me wrong, jpoulos.. I enjoy (most) of her posts myself. Just don't want her falling into the crowd of the "Metafilter Morlocks", that's all.

Publishing the letter was fine. Hey, don't lose any sleep over it, I would have done the same thing (take that as a warning if you like, folks).

I can also report that perogi, when called on it, did apologize to lia. I'm hoping that things are now cool.
