Bug in Opera April 17, 2004 8:28 PM Subscribe
The "my comments" "most recent comments" etc. box does not show up when this site is viewed with the opera browser. Or does it, and I just don't have mine set right? I struggled with it for a while, thinking I hadn't actually logged in. However, I was logged in. I could post comments. I accepted all cookies.
It's even wierder than that. I am clearly logged in so that I can post...if I click on the comments for any post on the front page, I do get the gray box at the bottom of the comments, and it does say "bingo" above it, suggesting that I am logged in. But at the top of the main page, I don't get the number of members, or my username, or the option to logout...in fact "login" is still a choice at the top of the page. And yet I *am* logged in. Surely this is more complicated than some setting on my browser? Anyway, if it isn't, sorry for the fuss.

have you tried: delete all mefi cookies (there's a shitload) and log in again?

This happened without me ever having logged in before from this browser. There weren't any mefi cookies to begin with.

Ahem. Er, it works now. Either thanks, or never mind, or both.

misses the point. from having read many dozens of these "my browser is acting weird" threads, i can tell you that most of them seem to get cleared up by deleting all the cookies and relogging in. it is by far the most dispensed advice from matt himself. glad you got it fixed, anyway.

Talking about recent comments, am I alone in thinking that not only troutfishing but now that chatterbox y2karl post way, way too much? I mean, contribution indexes over 7.00? Have these garrulous creatures no shame? ;)

Yes, yes you are. Yes, they have no shame.

I have been known to be wrong before and may be this time, but surely it is impossible to be logged in at a computer where you have never been logged in previously? Isn't the login driven by cookies? I thought that was why deleting the whole slew of MeFi cookies and thn logging back in has been proven to cure 98.3% of problems.

Yeah! And who is this so-called "Ethereal Bligh" whippersnapper that dares share the sexy sixes with us? Can he not be disciplined? I fear a quiet word will not be enough. These young pups, they're everywhere nowadays - what's the world coming to, amberglow, I ask you?!

Actually, I like that--it makes me feel like an old hand. I like this new bunch a lot. : >

If logging in without ever having any cookies is not the same as logging in after having cookies and deleting them all, then something somewhere is wrong.

what was previously true has no relevance to this issue.
if you are logged in and have the ability to post, you have a cookie, whether any was there before or not.
a cookie which has been set, has been set. repeat this 10 times to yourself under your breath. lather, rinse, repeat.
if that cookie was garbled in transmission, munged by your beta browser, or whatever, that's the way it is set. the only way to get it reset is to destroy it and receive a new one.

Funny how it ended up working without my ever deleting the cookies, though. How does that figure in?

MeFi must have written a new value to the cookie, eh?

My first guess was it might have something to do with javascript disabling or something to that effect....
The only thing I miss when doing MeFi with Opera are the bold/ italic/ link functions at the bottom of the comments box. But on the other hand, I love Opera so much that it doesn't feel like much of a loss.

The moral of the story seems to be that sometimes the best thing you can do is toss your cookies. You'll feel better afterwards. Trust us.
