AskMe Titles May 3, 2004 7:27 PM Subscribe
Screw the fancy stuff, I just wish the actual page title said something other than "Ask Metafilter | Community Weblog". Makes finding your bookmark or a history entry a pain in the ass.

I'm actually wondering why the codebases behind the three current 'Filters have been forked. Would it not be easier to build a single system with options available to the administrator to control individual functionality?

And once we have titles then AskMe can get an RSS feed...
snarfodox: refactoring existing code to support multiple sites with common functions saves time during later maintenance and enhancement at the cost of extra work up front; it's not in general easier.

nicwolff: you're right, I should have been more specific.
By 'easy' I meant that it should be less costly for a single programmer in terms of both time and resources to maintain a single complex codebase with support for optional feature switches than it would be to continue to develop and support three very similar complex codebases.
A huge number of user interface and database advantages would result from code unification. Obviously this hasn't happened, and I'm sure that there is a reason for it, hence the "I'm actually wondering why" component of my comment/question.

smackfu, you do know that when you bookmark a page you can give it a name other than the title?

D'oh! Me, with jocular impatience: "Hey, where's my pony already?!" Matt, politely: "You're sitting on it!" Surely the worst of MeFauxPas.
