Mefi closing? For serious sez #1 July 14, 2001 6:26 PM   Subscribe

Mefi hacked again? I was reading this thread and someone posting under your name said this:
k10k and Dreamless are taking breaks, not closing permanently.
As MetaFilter will, from August 6th to August 20th. I'll be in Australia, and will be taking the site down during my time away, to ensure I don't have any reason to worry about the site while I spend my vacation/honeymoon relaxing.

heh. it's true.

I'll leave it in a read-only state.

Haven't you figured out how to do "guest-mathowie's" or something?

Matt, it's too late to try to make us get lives. Don't make me get a life...

I think this will be good for us and MetaFilter. It will give us a chance to discover ourselves outside of the relationship, explore new interests, and see other Web sites. When Matt returns, we can be together again, stronger because of the absence; MetaFilter and its audience, intertwined for eternity.

phew, I'll be gone then too... Obsession withdrawal narrowly averted.

Can't we all just coordinate our vacations with MeFi shut downs? Can't you guys find some thing to do or some place to go between Aug 6-20?

Matt, that's a very good idea. You don't need to be worrying about anything whilst being on your honeymoon. Be happy, wear sunscreen, and drink pleasantly.

*sniff* we'll be alright...

But Jason, I don't want to see anyone else!!

<sniffle> I always knew you'd leave...

Hopefully the last post before close-down will be a good one - it'll be seen at the top of MeFi for a fortnight. Matt, maybe you should make the last post one pointing to your resume - no sense in letting the space go to waste, no?

We'll consider it a snapshot, held in our wallet, waiting for the return of the real thing. When you get back, it'll be crinkly, worn, and rough around the edges from repeated viewing.

(Totally off-topic, but there's an idea, design a site that degrades with time - the longer it's up, and the more page views it gets, the fainter the text, darker the background gets - maybe some accumulation of grime, fingerprints, etc. I suppose it's been done before.)

Since you wont be using it, Matt, can I use the URL for those two weeks?

No need, really...

Or have it lose two letters per day. For the last two days, it would be hundreds of pages with nothing but header graphics...

"It's not you, it's me," said Mathowie. "I need some time to find myself. After CNN, where do you go?"

I wonder if this will spike the economy, as we all find more productive uses of our time than following Zippity BOP™! around MetaTalk.

What's to become of me? - Eliza Doolittle, "My Fair Lady"

Actually, I think Matt's "new job" and honeymoon is actually some sort of ruse to separate us from our $$$. He leaves, we think we can cope, visit MeFi only to see the top-level post (that we will be stuck with for weeks) turn out to be nothing but a troll, and after a few minutes we get restless, click "refresh" several times, realize we're screwed until Matt returns, and begin pooling our money in a shameless attempt to lure Matt back from his "honeymoon" so that he can man the helm again. Sorry, Matt says, having too much fun on my honeymoon. The ante is upped considerably, as J-Ko & Associates get to work cashing in on their recent celebrity status to float an IPO to keep MeFi alive & well. Matt relents, is named CEO of MetaFilter, Inc, and we all go back to eating pancakes on a regular basis.

Is the AverageMeFite also baby jesus, by the way? Or vice versa? I have this need to know. It would explain a lot.

Oh yeah, and I think it's a great idea, Matt, to shut off Mefi for a while. It will be good for all of us.

True. We now know when to book our holidays. To Australia. Bwahahahahahahaha.

Its kind of a shame that the site will be down while Matt's in Australia. He'll never get the chance to experience the first thing in the morning chore that is; reading through the '19 links 458 comments since your last visit' whilst actually trying to do some 'real' work too.

I've been here about a month and a half and I gotta say, Australia rocks. Y'all should come over for a while.......

The weird thing is that August 6 to 20 is exactly when I'll be packing up and moving from Australia to South Korea. Perhaps I'm the anti-mathowie, and our presence on the same continent at the same time would result in the annihiliation of the Universe...

Nah, maybe not....

Actually, anytime MeFi is down is indeed a holiday in the original sense of "holy day," as in "Holy shit, where's MeFi?" or "Jesus Christ, I'm so jonesing for a MeFix right now."

This is bad news for random strangers everywhere, as they will now be accosted by drooling, wild-eyed MeFi users, desperate for vituperation.

Picture it:

Some guy: "You know, I've been looking for this Kid Rock album."

Drooling MeFite [barging in]: "You don't know much. Kid Rock sucks motherhuge ass. I have here a sheet of talking points supporting my position."

Some guy: "Uh . . . what?"

Drooling MeFite: "The man has an abortive, maladjusted weltanschaunng, and besides which, he's a stupid fucking redneck no-talent. In my humble opinion. Did you notice my use of the term weltanschaunng?"

Some guy: "Get ready to eat some teeth. I'm going to beat you stupid."

Drooling MeFite: "(Sigh) Yeah. I've been getting that a lot these days. Owww! Watch the glasses! Ow!"

<defensive exclamation>
Like I said, I suppose it's been done before. Sheesh.

And, you know, on reading Carl's idea - no, it's not quite the same. His (equally interesting idea) seems targeted to making an informational commodity artificially rare - and therefore somehow more valuable, since you know it's fleeting. My idea was merely the replication of real-world degradation over time. Outright evaporation might take years.
