It's another idea for rating threads/users!

Dig this. On Everything2, they have the concept of cools. If you're very good, you can get a cool, which you can then assign to a post.

Rather than rating all threads, users, etc. Maybe everyone could get 1 gold star to spend every month (week, year, lifetime). And gold-starred posts could get a special billing?

I dislike the idea immensely. As soon as there's a system to game, people are going to come along and try to game it. That would be bad, or at least annoying.

Just to expand a bit: It's not a freakin' competition.

Can't we just be happy with a post like:

I'm Seth, and I approve this thread.

or:

I'm Seth, and I object to this thread.

I don't see why you'd need the first one.

Don't be such a negative-nancy. Not every rating idea is bad just because it's a rating idea. Debate it on it's merits, or if you're going to result to name calling, do better than raising the spectre of SlashDuh.

This isn't a way to rate users, it's a way to point out really good posts that one might otherwise have missed (yes, I am aware of the side bar, this could be a refinement/semi-automation of that).

If gaming is a worry:
a) Make the easiest way to "game" the system be "make good posts"
b) Attach the gold-star to the post, and don't track it by user.

Good point. But courtesy demands...

I can respect that.

I have 5 cools/day at E2 and I rarely, if ever, use them. A personal message of thanks/support/criticism/death threat is WAY better than a ching.

Anything that makes Metafilter anything resembling an idea from CmdrTaco (aka: slashdot.org dungeon master) will drive everyone away and will attract trolls and clueless newbies. For evidence of this, visit slashdot.org and take a look at the user # on most posts. Higher, of course, being newer.

Slashdot has the troll problem because dumbass Malda made it that way.

Don't attract them here. Please, for the love of God, don't do it.

I don't get this urge for rankings that some folks seem to want to have here. Why, why, why must you impose your competitive compulsions upon our nice, peaceful Metafilter?
