Navel gazing: most popular September 2, 2001 10:31 PM   Subscribe

Some navel gazing (hmmmm, perty):

As far as I can tell, Blogger is the most popular weblog app, Metafilter the most popular weblog, and Jason Kottke the most popular weblogger.

You can't have him. He's already taken.

Why, why, and why?

Usually the topics of Blogger's and Jason's popularity have their own threads. Now we can retread them together!

Blogger is great if you never want to learn about how the web really works. Obviously this accounts for a lot of people otherwise we'd be talking about Greymatter.

Kottke is a species called Weblogus Celebritus Maximus class A. But seriously, once the weblogging buzz got around someone had to be the most popular and chances are it would be a likable, inoffensive person that is not afraid to show his butt on the webcam. Well, maybe not the last part. But he pretty much only annoys those that are annoyed by his popularity and he had to get there first for that to happen. I'd take a thousand thousand Kottkes over Mahir.

Blogger also asks that any user place a link to Blogger on their page...

I think Kottke should require that any reader place a link to Kottke.org on their page. Also,

Say wha...? All of Blogger's creators and many of the people I know who use it (myself included) are extremely clueful about how the web really works. Generalizations are always bad!

Um, Blogger is great because you don't have to learn how the web really works if you don't want to. It simply removes a barrier to publishing online. Nothing about Blogger prevents you from learning how the web really works, in fact, I think it encourages you. I know lots of people who learn HTML and CSS to improve their templates and who get accounts elsewhere to get off Blog*Spot (thereby familiarizing themselves with FTP).

It's nice to know people run to Blogger's defense for perceived slights. You guys act like I said everyone that uses Blogger is clueless or something. Touchy, touchy.

Well, john, what was your point then, if not to score a little gratuitous snark at Blogger? Did something just inspire you to do a little free-range opinionizing for the good of mankind?

Actually, you did: "Blogger is great if you never want to learn about how the web really works. Obviously this accounts for a lot of people otherwise we'd be talking about Greymatter."

Have you seen a doctor yet for your short term memory loss, john?

I wasn't as negative as you suggest. Blogger doesn't require anyone to learn the kind of things that you need to know for most web tools. Whether or not people that use Blogger are experts on web tech is entirely beside the point. So it's great for people that have no interest in getting down and dirty with all the drudgery of web design. People that don't want to depend on Blogger's servers and are not put off by having to know certain techy bits may not see Blogger as that great. I really don't care either way. The negative spin is your own. Apparently giving my view that Blogger is popular because one doesn't need to know tons about web design is a 'gratuitous snark' that 'generalizes' all Blogger users are clueless. Assuming the tonal quality of a post is negative seems to be a popular hobby in this thread.

I'm afraid john must die that blogger might live. Also, the thought of a thousand Mahirs is quite frightening to me and I think I made piddle.

I think that's the nicest thing anyone's ever said about me. I'm tearing up here....
