Is it befitting to compliment a response in Ask Metafilter?
if it's helpful, like: "Great idea foobar232, I'll try that when I get home" that's fine.
stuff that's more like "that's hilarious foobar232" not so much, as it's more like clutter IMO.

Sorry MMB, I would have dropped you an email if you had one in your profile. You included a fairly lengthy excerpt from a comment a few above yours and said that it was hilarious. I agree, it was totally hilarious, but noting that didn't add to the thread or answer the already-borderline "should I get a monkey?" thread. Maybe you want to drop Mayor Curly a line and let him know directly?

I left my comment a bit too quickly, but what I mean is the first example I gave seems like a vote of confidence given to advice that makes it appear more valuable to others looking for the answer. The second just bolsters the goofing around and silly answer aspect, which is fine every once in a while, but doesn't really require follow-ups.
