Portland Meetup February 18, 2005 4:28 PM Subscribe

How about a Portland meetup? The limitedpie family just moved to PDX from NYC and would love to meet Pacific Northwest MeFites. And to the New York meetup veterans: we miss you already, have a deep fried Mars Bar for us!

I'm in.

I'd recommend Backspace for a nice venue, but they don't serve booze. And I know how you mefites are about your booze.

heh. As if we needed a better, easier way to announce to the rest of the bar/coffee joint that "here, thar be dorks"

I'm down for it. I'd suggest somewhere with WiFi that would be able to host a large group in a comfortable format, and that has beer. (I'd say Pied Cow on Belmont, but there's no way there'd be enough space for all of us.)

OK, next NYC meetup, I'll send a shoutout to the west coast. Although we've sent several to fishfucker.

Can it wait until August?
posted by alana at 9:17 PM on February 18, 2005

alan: How about we do it again in August! What about next Saturday? You all will have to pick the place tho'. We are so new here, the only places we have been so far are the Kennedy School and Apizza Scholls (which btw, has better pizza than any I ever had in nyc. But don't tell that to these guys, they'd never believe it.)

The Portland Bloggers group meets at Backspace. It seems pretty geek friendly with wireless, etc.
posted by pb at 9:36 PM on February 18, 2005

pb, Backspace doesn't serve booze. I thought the point of a meetup was to consume copious amounts of alcohol?
posted by ramix at 9:44 PM on February 18, 2005

Backspace doesn't serve booze. That was easy enough.
posted by Dean Keaton at 10:28 PM on February 18, 2005

I'm in, as well. Preferably at a booze-dispensing locale.

limitedpie: no worries, 50% of all restaurants in Portland are owned by McMenamins so you were bound to stumble into one.

The Horse Brass or the Hedgehouse maybe?
posted by turbodog at 10:32 PM on February 18, 2005

How about Billy Reed's? Full bar, good restaurant, sorta centrally located, easy/free parking and free wifi.

Oh and ramix, dashiv is pretty close.

..ooOOoo.., (can i call you that?) Billy Reeds sounds just fine! Date and time?

You can just call me .ooO ramix. Anytime before March 10th works for me.

Skosh the Horsebrass, I can't stand the cigar smoke...

What about one of the HotLips pizzas? If we meet at the one in the EcoTrust building in NW (which has easy parking), we'll have wireless.

We could also meet at Ground Kontrol, which is an arcade in NW on 5th and Couch. They serve beer.

pikachulolita: I sent an IM, but email's in the profile. I checked your website for a resume but didn't find one. Tell me what you're looking for, I, uh, I know people in Portland, honey... I know lotsa people...
posted by SpecialK at 12:56 AM on February 19, 2005

Ooooh--does Ground Kontrol have places to sit? I suppose I could check myself, it being about a five-minute walk from me.

If GK isn't massively loud and has seating, that would be my first choice. Billy Reed's also sounds fine, if it's not loud.

That's the hard thing with bars--they tend to crank up the music so you can't talk. Portland Bloggers used to meet at Kell's--which is a great location--until we got tired of screaming at each other.
posted by frykitty at 8:55 AM on February 19, 2005

Personally, I like the idea of having a meetup in Olympia -- that way, both the PDX and Seattle Mefites can meet in the middle, making for an even bigger meetup!

Also, there's at least two active mefites in Oly (me and car_bomb), and according to my userpage, at least two more who post at least occasionally.

You could have your own room the bar where I work, if it was during happy hour. Else, there's liable to be a band or poetry readings happening. Unfortunately, it's on Alberta street, so not exactly convenient for all. It's non-smoking, too, which either a plus or a downfall, depending on who you are. Let me know if you are interested.

If you're talking about the Alberta St. Pub, the smoking section outside isn't too bad. Also, $1 PBRs on Tuesdays is all sorts of awesome.
posted by cmonkey at 1:00 PM on February 19, 2005

Hah! I am! $1 PBRs for happy hour til 8 every day, actually. Tuesday nights are most likely too busy for anything like a meet-up to happen. Plus, that's the night of the poetry reading. That room is left open Wed-Fri during happy hour. Lots of space, no noise. Or the patio would work too. Anyhow, it was just a suggestion. (You must know of me..kind of scary ;))

Is there consensus on a date yet?
posted by everichon at 2:35 PM on February 19, 2005

Well we have two primary questions, location and time. Why don't we list some preferences.

It seems the location options are Billy Reed's, Ground Kontrol, and the Alberta Street Pub. Your vote?

Secondarily, I'll offer up Friday, March 4th from 7:00-??? as a time. Good, bad, indifferent?

3/6 works for me
posted by turbodog at 3:49 PM on February 20, 2005

oops, 3/5
posted by turbodog at 3:50 PM on February 20, 2005

Friday, March 4th will interfere with the Portland Bloggers meeting, so you'll lose a few of us, unless you want to integrate the two meetings.

I'll vote for 3/5, Ground Kontrol. The two pubs are equally hard for the car-free, so I'll manage whichever one if I can.
posted by frykitty at 9:33 AM on February 21, 2005

Does Ground Kontrol have enough seating for a group of 12 to 20?
posted by turbodog at 11:53 AM on February 21, 2005

There's the #6 that goes right down mlk from downtown.
Both pubs are easily reached from this line. I work weekends, so can't make it to another location. I would happily make it to the next one, though.
posted by immer geradeaus at 1:15 PM on February 21, 2005

3/5 works for me.

Could someone please check on seating at Ground Kontrol? I really like the idea, because it gives us the opportunity to wander off and play games if we so feel. I think gatherings are always more fun if there's an activity, not just a bunch of random people getting together and adding alcohol.
posted by SpecialK at 4:34 PM on February 21, 2005

(If there isn't seating there, I still say we meet there and have a check-in area where you can get a genuine reproduction MetaFilter Name Tag with your username and IRL name, and then you can wander around and hang out with who you want to meet.)

Oh, and hopeless - You like sore thumbs! You're ok in my book.
posted by SpecialK at 12:31 AM on February 22, 2005

I stopped by GroundKontrol tonight to check it out (and also to see if it would work.) Great place! Ohhh, the hours I need to brush up on my joust and defender! But, unfortunately for the drinking fans, if you want alcohol there you have to rent the place for a "private party" which gets steep. $50 set up and then $100 to $150 an hour depending on the day (weekday/weekend). I think this leaves us with the two pub choices mentioned above. (And will they work for hopeless?)
posted by limitedpie at 2:20 AM on February 22, 2005

Well, poo on GK then. I can catch a bus. I assume both those bars are non-smoking?
posted by frykitty at 7:59 AM on February 22, 2005

I vote for Alberta St. Pub (and not just 'cause it's two blocks from my house). So is 3/5 solid?
posted by Specklet at 1:03 PM on February 22, 2005

3/5 is solid for me. Is Alberta St. Pub non-smoking?
posted by SpecialK at 1:20 PM on February 22, 2005

Alberta Street Pub and 3/5 work for me. I can also give some rides to and home if needed, cause you know mathowie just going to get bombed so I can be the designated driver...

3/5/Alberta st Pub sounds good to me! Is that enough consensus to make it official?
posted by wtfwjd? at 2:51 PM on February 22, 2005

Yes, Alberta St Pub is non-smoking, but there's a half-heated patio outside for smokers. No, no minors can go there, sorry about that. We open at 6 on Saturdays, and we may have a show going on that night. I'll check when I go in later and let you know that status of that.
posted by immer geradeaus at 2:51 PM on February 22, 2005

Ah, well, maybe at some point later we can do a coffee/tea thing. Sometime in the next two years, that is- after that I'll be game/legal for a bar.
posted by hopeless romantique at 3:36 PM on February 22, 2005

What time dat do?
posted by Specklet at 4:05 PM on February 22, 2005

OK, so there's a pretty big concert happening at the Alberta Street Pub on the 5th. That means that the 'music room' will be full, but the actual bar will not. The concert is at 7, so I'd expect that the rush of people will be over by 7:30. I would say that anytime after that would be best, so as not to get caught up in the mix of confused concert-goers. (Trust me, they'll be confused. It's amazing.) If everyone wants to be inside, in case of a rainy day, I can reserve some tables.

Must say, though, I really never thought you'd agree to the pub, and now I'm nervous. ;)
posted by immer geradeaus at 5:34 PM on February 22, 2005

Does the pub allow minors in the evening?
posted by turbodog at 10:57 PM on February 22, 2005

Ok, sorry to throw another wrench in the proceedings ... but what about someplace like the Tin Roof? It's on Alberta, and it's a coffee shop that allows minors but has beer.
posted by SpecialK at 11:39 AM on February 23, 2005

I think that is a better idea SpecialK. I think it should be set up so anyone and everyone can come. So, how about it all? 7:00ish, Saturday March 5 at the Tin Roof?
posted by limitedpie at 3:32 PM on February 23, 2005

I don't think there's gonna be enough room at the Tin Shed, not on a Saturday night...
posted by Specklet at 3:49 PM on February 23, 2005

I don't really hang out there, but does the Kennedy School have a place for minors and beers?
posted by Specklet at 3:49 PM on February 23, 2005

The main restaurant at the Kennedy School should be minor & booze friendly.
posted by turbodog at 8:04 PM on February 23, 2005

I'd vote kidney school over the other places that have been mentioned, even though I don't like McMenamins that much. Specklet's right that Tin Shed is going to be very crowded on a Friday night.

(Sorry, Immer.)

I really think this thing should happen at the Rialto on SW 4th & Washington. Cheap beer, cheap liquor, massive space, and it's a block or two away from all forms of public transit. Also, there are pool tables.
posted by cmonkey at 8:11 PM on February 24, 2005

I haven't been to the Rialto in a while. How smokey is it? Do they have a few tables we could shove together?
posted by turbodog at 8:58 PM on February 24, 2005

The Rialto is no more, at least for now. The building they were in is under massive reconstruction and as far as I can tell they haven't moved anywhere else. My office is a block away so I see the construction guys hanging out everyday. Oh, and it was super smoky turbodog.
posted by ..ooOOoo....ooOOoo.. at 11:58 PM on February 24, 2005

If we want pool, the place to go is Touche (NW Glisan and 14th). But upstairs (where the pool tables are) is 21+.

Have we decided on a place? Does someone want to make an executive decision?
posted by SpecialK at 9:50 PM on February 26, 2005

It looks like the closest we came to a consensus was Kennedy School (with a vote by SpecialK, turbodog + Specklet) So how about that? 7ish, Saturday March 5 at the Main Restaurant at the Kennedy School! See you all there!
