Epidurals may seem to "rock" but so often they interfere with breastfeeding, I am sad to say. A baby with drugs in its system is often quite groggy and has trouble feeding.
Make sure you have a good lactation consultant. Every baby deserves the best: mama's milk.
Congrats etc. posted by beth at 10:26 AM on May 2, 2005

There are consultants? Like Accenture? Doesn't the kid just know what to do?
It is common for newborns to just clamp down on mom's nipple any old way, and end up hurting mom and / or not getting enough milk. A good latch is essential. The baby's mouth needs to be wide open, and its lips need to cover a fair amount of areola as well to properly depress the milk sinuses and squirt the milk into its mouth.
I read tons of breastfeeding books and so forth, but even I had latch problems and needed a consultant. Then we got thrush. Ugh, the pain! We finally got over it and things went swimmingly. Many women give up and start feeding formula without really giving breastfeeding much of a chance to really get going.
Breastmilk has so much amazing stuff in it, they don't even know what all of its ingredients are, or how they work. Mother's milk has custom-made antibodies to bacteria and viruses that the baby is exposed to, among many many other things that formula simply can't match. Also it changes composition throughout the feed, becoming fattier as baby suckles. As time passes, the milk composition changes to suit the age of the baby, as well. Toddler milk is quite different from newborn milk.
The baby formula industry is very well-funded and determined to thwart breastfeeding at every turn, doing everything from giving free samples even to breastfeeding mothers to creating shitty breast pumps that hurt women, all to make a profit. There's tons more if you start looking into it.
Breastmilk is one of the coolest things on earth, and is one of the best things you can do for your baby. I nursed my daughter til she was nearly two, and enjoyed it thoroughly. posted by beth at 3:03 PM on May 2, 2005
