No, but you can avoid smearing it all over yourself.

Yeah, with the really bad ones, people don't waste time with MeTa. My sense is that people are calling for a deletion there, so they throw a)"throwaway" comments in and b)comments that show strong disapproval in there as a means to discourage these sorts of posts.
For a second, I was pretty sure that the one "good" comment in there was this one:
I got drunk last night
posted by angry modem at 11:21 AM EST on May 1
because that is awesome.

I thought that thread was fine. Thing is, it's not really 'newsfilter.' I've seen crap all over about this story, but if anybody had bothered to read the link, they would've seen that this wasn't nameless, faceless 'national coverage;' it was a pretty funny bunch of comments by local people who shook their heads at 'that ridiculous woman.'

Actually, OC, flarbuse's comment is no different than any other. The rest of us were just exercising our poetic license.
I love it when newbies get all flustered; they're so cute!!! ;-P

mischief: "I love it when newbies get all flustered; they're so cute!!! ;-P"
There are more of us than there are of you. Hell, metafilter was shit before we got here, anyhow.
Besides, 'poetic license' only applies to people who aren't being idiots. That counts y'all out. 'Groaning' isn't the best use of bandwidth, friend.
It's nice that this new 'tag post' option works for comments, too.

koeselitz: you're right, but I think if matt gets a head's-up on thirteen or seventeen bad comments out of ~20, the whole thread is going in the garbage.
It's a mandate. The people have spoken.

exlotuseater: I disagree. I've never seen Matt say, "well, this post doesn't look so bad, but if you guys don't like it, I'll delete it." I have, on the other hand, seen Matt say, "the first dozen comments here are not useful. I'm deleting them."

Btw OC, are you making any distinction between those who are criticizing the FPP itself and those who are criticizing the content of the link? I'll grant you the former, but the latter certainly do belong in the blue.

I wish Matt hadn't pruned.
We either respect the right of our fellow Mefites to have opinions we dislike or even detest, or we don't. The commenters had a reason -- what reason, I don't know -- for making crappy comments. Perhaps it was their way of saying they thought the post sucked.
Now, I wish people who thought posts "suck" would just refrain in commenting on those posts, and I've said that many times before.
But if they can't managed that restraint, I'd rather see their crappy comments and know that we respect our fellows' right to have opinions we don't like (and allow us to modify our opinions of them in light of their comments) than to see a faux-"pristine" thread.
It just seems more honest and respectful.

Why didn't you delete the post, Matt? It's a major news story about something completely trivial. It's not even worth being on all the news stations and newspapers, which it is. Much less on MeFi. I can't see how it's even remotely FPP worthy.
