London meetup! May 8, 2005 11:01 AM   Subscribe

Londoners: are y'all due for a meet-up anytime soon? Say, between may 20 & june 2?

Yes, I'll be in town visiting family. If you're still recovering from the last one, don't mind me, but if people are up for it anyway, I'd definitely try to make it (various family stuff means I can't swear to it-)

Yay!

I'm up for that. Didn't make the last one.

That's London, England, right? 'Cos I'm trying to catch up to amberglow as the meetupliest Mefite ever (ok, no real chance of that occurring, but, hey, ya know).

I can probably make it. More info needed. Yay!

Are we putting these in Upcoming yet? I might be around.

heh. It's a noble aim, but we've no chance.
amberglow, I'm willing to do the shouting, but someone else is gonna have to provide the camera... I'm camera-impaired.

As for where / when, I'm at yr mercy. I'll mostly be staying at the grannie's in W1, but my bros are up in islington, & my aunt down in clapham, and I can navigate the tube well enough, (tho' if we can stay w/in zone 1-2, that might be easier on my wallet.) I dunno, maybe the weekend of the 27th? If other people find the weekend of the 20th easier, I can prob. do that too, though I may have a slightly busier schedule due to having just arrived. During the week is also fine for me since I'll be on vacation anyway. Only known plan is mom has a poetry thingy on tuesday eves that I most likely will accompany her on.

Where've you met in the past? My knowledge of your fair city is limited, so I'm depending on you guys to make suggestions...

I'll be in London evening of Sat 28th May. Not sure of the state I'll be in but I'll be there...

Could meet at the Bierodrome in Islington?
posted by i_cola at 5:54 AM on May 9, 2005

Better link for Bierodrome
posted by i_cola at 5:56 AM on May 9, 2005

I may be free on the 28th - I've applied to be on the BBC's Test the Nation on that day, so if I don't get on, I have an empty space in my calendar..
posted by salmacis at 6:11 AM on May 9, 2005

i_cola -- that venue works enormously well for me.
posted by nthdegx at 6:38 AM on May 9, 2005

is the bierodrome nearish the angel st. station? Or is it a different part of islington?
posted by mdn at 7:39 AM on May 9, 2005

It's certainly walkable from it, mdn, yeah. Ten minute walk north I would estimate. It's not an unpleasant little jaunt either.
posted by nthdegx at 8:11 AM on May 9, 2005

If you want to post/email more specific details about where you're coming from I might be able to recommend an easier route.
posted by nthdegx at 8:13 AM on May 9, 2005

5 min walk north from Angel. 10 if you're taking in the view ;-)
posted by i_cola at 8:24 AM on May 9, 2005

Well... there's a few pubs on the way, don't forget ;)
posted by nthdegx at 8:44 AM on May 9, 2005

Bugger, probably won't be able to make it as I'm really busy round then. And the Bierodrome's only down the road from me. Oh well.

Have fun folks.

mdn writes "My knowledge of your fair city is limited"

It certainly is if you have the impression that London is a fair city in any sense of the word ; )
posted by asok at 9:59 AM on May 9, 2005

yeah, i was gonna make a paragraphical expansion of the phrase, i.e., "your fair(ly tolerable) city," or something, but I actually love london, so.
posted by mdn at 10:17 AM on May 9, 2005

Have fun guys, will not be in the country unfortunately. Send us pics!

So, the 28th at the Bierodrome...I'll be seeing Brixton's finest the Alabama3 at the Zodiac, Oxford. Damn.
posted by dash_slot- at 1:53 PM on May 9, 2005

well, nothing's carved in rock yet. So far we've got:

interested: veedubya, dash_slot-, blag, nthdegx, grouse, bonaldi, i_cola, salmacis, pretty_generic, asok? & dodgygeezer

of whom grouse, bonaldi & i_cola can definitely do the 28th; salmacis may be able to; and dash_slot- & dodgygeezer can't.

whatever I missed, someone please clarify.

Also, if we do go with that saturday eve we should probably, like, choose a time.

I'll be playing in one of the last ever football matches at the temple of football that is Highfield Road, Coventry in the afternoon but the intention is to get back to London that evening so I guess that somewhere around 7-8 could be agreeable.
posted by i_cola at 3:36 PM on May 9, 2005

One day someone will visit the MeFi pariah zone that is Cornwall and I will be able to go to a meet-up again. In the meantime I will continue to enjoy the superior UK weather and lovely countryside here. And being jealous of i_cola.

Count me in for the 28th! Bierodrome can be kind of a madhouse though, no?
posted by lazywhinerkid at 1:09 PM on May 10, 2005

Barring any last-minute work travel, I think I can make the 28th. Sweet.

If the Bierodrome does turn out to be a madhouse, there's tons of other places to choose along City Road. Just not Walkabout. The horror...
posted by blag at 7:04 AM on May 11, 2005

well, we're off the front page but I'm trusting you londoners to know your pubs, so am marking "bierodrome on the 28th around 7 or 8" in my datebook, and we'll confirm or alter deets sometime closer to the fact.

I am clueless about that "upcoming" site, by the way - if anyone else wants to list this there, go for it.
posted by mdn at 11:27 AM on May 11, 2005

I sense a growing consensus for:

around 8 p.m.
28 May 2005
Bierodrome, Islington

If there aren't a lot of objections by tomorrow evening, perhaps we should post to the grey then? I'd wait longer, but anyone who knows about this thread has probably already commented in it.
posted by grouse at 12:57 PM on May 11, 2005

Yes.

Just, generally, yes.

Bierodrome in Islington ? Man there are so many better places for a piss-up - what about somewhere in or around Old Street or even Soho is good for a hoot.
posted by shoez at 8:08 AM on May 12, 2005

How about Cargo in Hoxton?
posted by Human Flesh at 8:31 AM on May 14, 2005

I don't know where hoxton or old street are (soho is easy tho') but so long as the travel isn't too complicated from central london (bond st/marylebone lane area), it's fine with me. I will remember my A-Z :).
posted by mdn at 1:15 PM on May 14, 2005

It looks like the majority still think Bierodrome is the way to go, so I'll assume that's still the deal. It's almost two weeks off, though, so I dunno if we need a confirmation / reminder thread yet - perhaps nthdegx or i_cola should post that since they have come up with the plan? If no one else did, I would probably post a follow-up thread early next week, once I'm actually on your continent... but if you think we should make the announcement earlier, feel free to do so.

anyway, look forward to meeting everyone!

probably pulling a jim jones by now, but finding myself never without wireless access, I thought I'd say hullo from JFK as I wait for boarding to begin on my flight to the UK... it's practically impossible to get away from the internet with a laptop. Though I don't know if it will work in london. I know my cell phone doesn't, so perhaps I'll be reduced to my mom's dial up over there.

Nope.
posted by grouse at 1:31 AM on May 20, 2005

hello, folks. I'm writing from off Marylebone lane in westminster - found an internet cafe and my laptop does indeed connect over here as well. So, now that I've got a method I'll check in more regularly from here... is one of those islington boys going to post the invite this week? I still haven't much of a clue where the bierodrome is...
posted by mdn at 3:23 AM on May 22, 2005

You might almost be pulling a Jim Jones now, so don't count on them seeing that message. :)

The reminder invite is all you.
