New Comments is/are broken.
When someone adds a comment to a post, it used to say how many of the comments were new. It doesn't do that anymore.

Yeah, it's an issue with the new server -- the new comment and link tracking kind of works for me for a while, then not at all.
I'm still waiting for the full transition to the new server to complete, but will fix it this week for sure. It's probably something fairly minor.

I figured as much and its not all the time for me either.
Certainly not a big deal but it did make it easier to keep tabs on the threads that are still live.

Metafilthy still keeps up, and if you order the front page by latest posts, it's easier still...

benzo8, how does one order the front page by latest posts? By which I hope you mean comments...

Umm - "sort by date" orders the front page by recent posts, and "sort by recent comments" orders it by recent comments.

before monju_bosatsu chimes in, I'll preempt him with a timely request to add the "sort by recent comments" to the green and grey...

Man, this is driving me bonkers. As far as I can tell, everything is exactly the same across both servers.

Unlike sciurus, I have this problem all across the board.

seems to work again in metatalk for me, though new comments don't immediately show on the front page.

Apologies, now it says there are two new comments (and hopefully there will be three new comments when I refresh it the next time).

Aha! I finally fucking found the problem. I went through all the code and settings on the server several times. It was only after checking every possible problem that I noticed it.
The new server by default was set to central time (it's in Texas somewhere). So all the new links/comment checks were checking two hours into the future. When you check if anything's been posted since two hours from now, you'll always get zero.
It should work itself out in the next day or so, as regular pacific times get stored in the last visit database.

It's remarkable how useful that one little feature is, and how unusable Metafilter becomes without it.
