Would an extremely cool Greasemonkey script be an acceptable FPP? [a little more inside]

Since it's not immediately accessible (as you'd need Greasemonkey) for probably the vast majority of users I'm conflicted about posting it.

Not everyone uses Firefox, or wants to. Nonetheless, that doesn't stop Flash or Unicode posts, which not everyone can read, view or translate. The majority consensus here seems to be that inaccessible posts are just fine as FPP material, so the criteria you'd use probably shouldn't include whether the subject matter is accessible to everyone.

Um..I don't know. For those of us that use greasemonkey and are not what many on this site would regard as tech proficient, there's mozdev and deliciouspopular and askme that probably keep us up to date. If you post it I will want to read it however. Otherwise add me to the list with ori to notify!

If it's the Gmail preview bubble script, then no. If I have to click on an email in my inbox, I'll just left-click and see the whole thread, damnit!

Well, since only a fraction of the website readers use firefox, and only a fraction of them use greasemonkey, the interest would be limited. On the other hand, that's never stopped people before in other subjects. I suppose if it's REALLY REALLY EARTH-SHATTERINGLY cool, and you also included links to firefox and to greasemonkey, you could conceivably convert some people to a new browser.

Yeah if you're worried about the strength of a single link to carry a FPP, you could always add some more backgrounder/content for the less tech-savvy that might answer the "why should I care?" questions that some will inevitably have.

Post it.

if it's REALLY REALLY EARTH-SHATTERINGLY cool...
then it will stand on its own and doesn't need a link to FireFox (?!) to support it.

Conversely...

Post it. Not-being-relevant-to-100%-of-users has never really been a criteria around here. For instance: all the US-politics posts.

Post it so matt can delete the shit out of it.

If you post it expect comments about how Firefox is an over hyped piece of shit, a few token nods to Greasemonkey's recent security fuck up, a few jaded "who cares" and very little enthusiasm.

The good news is that it probably won't get deleted!

Oh, and as it happens I'd quite like to know what this magic script is.

I don't think it's FPP worthy. I do however demand a link in this thread. Now.

But with a pretty-please.

Awww...I was hoping you'd post a slick new MeFi killfile script so I don't have to read the posts of a few...er...elite MeFiers.

Well, now we can definitely say the answer is no.

I don't give a shit, I still think its cool. You know that if Google actually implemented something like this (minus the greasemonkey and the bugs) people would be drooling over it. As it stands, its a great idea but still too buggy to be really useful.
and yeah, Dodgeygeezer,it's kinda sad how on target you were.

Edible Energy writes "You know that if Google actually implemented something like this (minus the greasemonkey and the bugs) people would be drooling over it."

The problem with that idea is that not every browser would support this functionality. As sad as it may be, there are people out there who are using outdated (extremely outdated) browsers that are nowhere near the latter-day somewhat standards-compliant browsers of today. It's much easier said than done and if you are not worrying about alienating some potential users and their associated ad-revenue (as Google most certainly is) then it is impossible (now, anyway).

Uh, Greasemonkey doesn't work for anything but Firefox, right?

Firefox doesn't even have 10% of the browser share.
posted by angry modem at 9:57 AM on August 23, 2005

But it's probably more like 50% or more for MeFi users angry modem.
