Atlanta DragonCon Meetup August 26, 2005 11:17 AM   Subscribe

I asked in 2003. I forgot to ask in 2004. So I'm asking now.
Dragon*Con 2005 opens in Atlanta on Labor Day weekend. So 'fess up ... any MeFites going?

I'll be going to Cascadia here in Seattle on the same weekend. I'm 36 and it'll be my first con.

I'd love to, but I've had sex before.

DragonCon? Lock up your daughters sons.

Is this something you'd have to be a nerd to know about? Because I am not a nerd.

Oh yeah, aight. Aight, I put on my robe and wizard hat.

No, I'll be in San Francisco at the San Francisco Grand Prix. Any MeFites going?

I can't go to Dragon Con. I'm going to Freaknik.
posted by dios at 1:14 PM on August 26, 2005

No. I'll be at Willy's enjoying a good burrito, or maybe Flying Biscuit. Or, y'know, Ikea.

Actually I'll be in South Carolina. But I wouldn't go even if I were in Atlanta. Not that I'm judging or anything.

maybe a little

MMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmm, Flying Biscuit. Some vegetarian food I actually like!
I'm going to Freaknik.
Not to add onto the sarcasm, but wasn't Freaknik moved to Miami or something a few years back? (I've been out of the Atlanta loop for a while)

On topic, I'd love to go, but isn't it farkin expensive? I'm currently the very definition of a poor, unemployed post-undergrad student. So, that's a maybe I s'pose

I AM ATTACKING THE DARKNESS

Freaknik? Is that what you've named your special happy alone time?

I'm undecided. If I roll 16 or higher on my 20-sided dice, then I'm totally there. If I roll 3 or less, then I'm dead.

*rolls*

Metafilter: We Eat Our Own.

Seriously. The nerd-baiting is cute, but we've covered this before. We're all geeks here -- whether we admit it or not.

But really, if you're going to be in Atlanta next weekend, swing through the Hyatt Regency Downtown. Pick any night from Thursday to Sunday and just stroll through the lobby. Bring your camera.

And jmd82, people-watching in the costume-filled concourse is still free.

I don't know what is more depressing:
1. I've never been to dragoncon (at 28)
2. I still want to go to dragon con at 28.
3. I still won't ge to go to dragon con this year.

I wish.

I will be at MOE.DOWN so unfortunately I cannot go. There is very little that could tear me away from it at this point.

grabbingsand, there is no 'we' here. Go, have all the fun you want. Just don't ever associate me with those people in any way whatsoever.

Live long and leave me the fuck out of it, m'kay?

Hey, I watch (the new) Battlestar Galactica. But comparing that degree of nerdness to DragonCon is like comparing a diluted rum & Coke to hardcore heroin use. That said, I hope they have fun etc., but it interests me about as much as, well, hardcore heroin use.

Man, fuck the reluctant conventioneer guise. I've never been to Atlanta, but it's a safe bet that, were I in the area, I'd be at Dragon*Con, asterisk and everything.

San Diego Comic-Con was great this year, great last year, and will be great next year. I refuse to apologize for wanting to interact from time to time with those who share a few of my more accessible passions.

If the striped-shirt-and-Red-Bull frat crowd can gather in obnoxious clubs and date rape each other without compunction, I will most certainly go to the occasional comix/SF/fantasy convention and argue with some dude over First Spaceship on Venus versus This Island Earth or whether the Eagle Transporter could outgun a Y-wing fighter or the thematic subtleties of Chris Ware versus Daniel Clowes.

Enjoy Dragon*Con, grabbingsand and whoever goes, and take a photo of some Xena or Trinity for me.

I still have no idea what exactly Dragon*Con is, aside from some guesses based upon this and similar threads, and I am too lazy to look it up so I must remain clueless and I will never end this sentence

I never attend Dragon*Con (as I am not into anything involved within it), yet I always end up finding myself around where it occurs by coincidence. (Really threw me off my first year here, seeing everyone dressed up and having no idea what was going on.)

Me, for one day, just to pimp my comic...

I mean.. to pimp my comic!!
posted by jpburns at 4:15 PM on August 27, 2005

No, because I'll be at the Drive-Invasion 2005, Atlanta's other Labor Day tradition.
posted by BoringPostcards at 9:37 PM on August 27, 2005

I shan't be able to attend. But a woman who has spanked me will be there. She'll be wearing an outlandish costume and, at least some of the time, very high heels.

I've always wanted to instigate a drunken scavenger hunt. Please let me know if I've succeeded.

So dude, what does your mom look like? At least give us a hint?

Just don't ever associate me with those people in any way whatsoever.

Dude, you're arguing about a Sci Fi convention on the internet and you have PGP public key block on your profile. Face it. You're already a great big nerd.

In the past, I've dropped in on Saturday to gawk at the costumes and always enjoyed it. I planned to go this year, but life's gotten in the way. Which is a shame 'cause I learned that Charlie Anders of Godhatesfigs will be there and I really wanted to meet the genius.
