Is someone using Mefi as his own private soapbox?

He has his opinions and that's great (even though I strongly disagree with a lot of them), but I don't think providing a platform for the Gospel According To Cleardawn was what matt had in mind.

Happydaz, you're missing my point. There are several if not dozens of self-described Marxists here, but most of them can communicate their ideas without arrogant speechifying and condescension (graymouser and n9 come to mind). If he wants to promote his platform, that's his prerogative, but maybe he should get his own blog.

And although I'm sure his response will be to accuse me of being a Bush-loving fascist republican baby-eating ogre, I'd find his speechifying and didacticness equally annoying if he were a Republican, Libertarian, Christian Fundamentalist or Amway rep.

what's the point of this post, Giovanni?

That rather than engage in actual discussion, he's using this place as a party platform, every topic seems to be an excuse to tell us all of the glorious worker's paradise he will create. It's stultifying and annoying and it interferes with threads. YMMV.

I was under the impression that matt didn't like users using the site as a political promotion tool.

arrogant speechifying

if it's about manners, I'm surprised you're singling out cleardawn. so many others are much more arrogant and vitriolic, myself included. if your problem is cleardawn's alleged Marxism, instead, well, you can take comfort in the fact that you live in the least-Marxist nation evar, where the nanny-state doesn't exist and self-reliance works so beautifully.

and I don't think cleardawn's running for office, or if he/she is, he/she isn't placing ads all over MeFi. so, again, I don't see where the problem is. if we can take PeePee, I don't see where the problem with cleardawn is

I'm finishing my coffee and my temper is cooling down, so cleardawn, if you'll indulge me I'll try to explain what bugs me about the comments you've made and your attitude towards me.

Just because you claim to be friends with lots of Florida ex-Cubans, whose views you say you share, doesn't prove that you have a rightwing viewpoint.

Firstly, living in Dade County, it would be difficult not to make the acquaintance of a lot of ex-Cubans. And yeah, my friends told me their family stories, and I took them for what they were worth, that maybe not all anger at Castro's Cuba is simply right wing propoganda, that some of it may in fact, be legitimate and justified. And since these people have direct experience with the matter, I'm inclined to give their opinions a little more weight than someone who hasn't had the same experiences.

On the other hand, it does STRONGLY SUGGEST that you have a right wing viewpoint. Perhaps I should have made more effort to find out about all the charity work you've done, poems you've written, little old ladies you've helped across the road, etc, before I respond to your posts.

Then again, perhaps I should carry on being lazy, and just respond to what you actually post?

jonmc, in the future will you refrain from using Metatalk as your own private soapbox for airing minor personal disputes arising from political threads?

If I confront someone in a thread, I'm "shitting on the thread," If I bring a beef here, I'm making a useless callout. No matter what you say or do, somebody's going to find a reason to object to it. Not worth bothering, ultimately, I guess.

OmieWise, you can't alter the quote in order to make a tagline, it has to remain intact.

As so:

"stupid shitbox clown shoes" is not only one of the most amusing things I've read here in a while, but if a Google search is any indication, genuinely original.

Stupid and shitbox are commonplace. Clownshoes is not only in the style of, but is one of the many noun+noun imaginary epithets popularized and spread far and wide by the SA Forums. We've had many irruptions of SAspeak here, often with breathless clapping of little hands in response. Same same. I like the epithets when they're clever, too, of course, but don't go ascribing more creative juice to techgnollogic than he deserves.

I didn't bother reading the first 95% of this thread, but I think jonmc has a point. He has one bent and he's obviously thrusting it on the thread, even comparing the right-wing to rapists. I recommend toning down the rhetoric to keep this site sane.

Agreeing with stav here. Clownshoes is a common SA epithet, but shitbox is a new one to me and I kinda like it. Lot's of good imagery potential there.

Your squalid trailer home? Shitbox.
Your Coke can-filled Honda Element? Shitbox.
Your freakishly cubic skull? Shitbox.

The latest Peter Molyneux game? Shitbox.

It's occurred to me that jonmc is the new Miguel, posting fun MeTa threads in which he can carry on a conversation over the course of several dozen comments - the only difference being that instead of open-ended questions about MeFi culture they're always about the latest guy who looked at him sideways. I guess it's better than having no Miguel at all...

I stand firm that the true provenance was the SA Forums. More game developers than scriptwriters there, probably, but still.

Anyway, that does not militate against the idea that it also appeared in Jay and Silent Bob, asstractor.
