Are the two identical? Craniac's idea isn't a repository for all MeFi-related photos; it would yield a list of individual pictures, one for each member -- no meetup photos of puppets and beer steins, and no flooding of 636 photos from a few amateur photographers drowning everyone else...just a simple 1:1 collection. It's actually a pretty good suggestion.

I took craniac to mean that metafilter users should tag all their pictures as "metafilter_user". If this is incorrect, and instead craniac intends to collect photos of mefites, then by all means, tag away.
posted by monju_bosatsu at 10:28 AM on November 1, 2005

I thought the same thing as monju. I like the suggestion now that it's been clarified, except that the only self-portrait in my photostream is a rather goofy-looking photo.
posted by Plutor at 10:37 AM on November 1, 2005

Craniac intended 1:1 pictures of users. so clicking on the metafilter_user tag would then display individual images of metafilter users.

odd. There were three photos, then they disappeared. Maybe "metafilteruser" would be a better tag.
posted by craniac at 10:42 AM on November 1, 2005

I had trouble with the underscore as well. Not that my photos have gone public yet (a potential running joke).
posted by safetyfork at 10:46 AM on November 1, 2005

Ok, http://www.flickr.com/photos/tags/metafilteruser/ is working, and there are a handful of pictures up. This is cool.
posted by craniac at 10:46 AM on November 1, 2005

If you reload enough times they appear. Flickr's servers suffer from major synchronization problems. Its the result of an architecture that compromised integrity for speed.
posted by vacapinta at 10:47 AM on November 1, 2005

Well, now you're going to have to pick one.
posted by cribcage at 10:50 AM on November 1, 2005

No he doesnt. Flickr treats them the same.
posted by vacapinta at 10:52 AM on November 1, 2005

metafilteruser is the the one to use, because I think that Flickr auto-converts "metafilter_user" into "metafilteruser" anyway.
posted by craniac at 10:52 AM on November 1, 2005

Spaces and underscores are treated as if neither was actually in the tag. Therefore, "metafilteruser", "metafilter user", and "metafilter_user" are all the same tag.

Or what they said.

Question: should those of us with meetup pictures tag all of the relevant shots with "metafilteruser"? This has the potentially undesirable side effect of letting us select "official" portraits for one another (at least in the limited sense in which this is official). But if we don't do this then everyone who wants a tagged picture on Flickr will have to get an account there, etc., etc..
posted by Songdog at 1:30 PM on November 1, 2005

Meetup shots should just be tagged with "metafilter", same as always. I only tagged my own meetup shot with "metafilteruser" because it's actually a picture of myself that I myself posted (which just happens to be a meetup shot).

They don't like non-photographs and especially don't like x-rated or copyrighted (not by you) photographs. And they need more than one or two, probably, to judge. An actual person makes the judgment.
