Craniac seems to be spamming conversations with random posts pushing the metafilteruser tag on Flickr:

The idea he is promoting is not even a good one.
posted by fire&wings at 5:15 AM on November 4, 2005

Yeah, I'd noticed that. I quite liked the idea, but since he's being such a total knobend about it, I'm going to add a 'craniac is a knobend' tag to the images I've tagged with metafilter_user.

Can we set a one-day record for unrelated bans? That would be sweet.

also what is this mania with replicating the effect of flickr groups by tagging? it's weird and it oppresses me. Help me, I'm being oppressed!

What a dick.

Er, um.
posted by stavrosthewonderchicken at 5:52 AM on November 4, 2005

Craniac is an otherwise excellent MeFite and I suspect he's just excited about the idea which I've found sort of fun. That said, yeah he probably needs to ease up a bit. Stav points to the in-thread callout about this one post down, and I think we can roll all annoying repetition complaints into that thread.
posted by jessamyn at 6:43 AM on November 4, 2005

The idea was okay, but in addition to the MeFi spammming that craniac is doing, some folks are spamming the tag--or at minimum using it differently than its intended purpose.
posted by terrapin at 6:43 AM on November 4, 2005

Does this explain it at all?

No?

Oh, okay. Never mind, then.
posted by armage at 6:44 AM on November 4, 2005

Terrapin points out the reason you really might want to make an endeavor like this into a group thing instead of a tag thing. [though I'm not sure what you're referring to specifically]
posted by jessamyn at 6:44 AM on November 4, 2005

It was a pretty neat idea, actually. But then he started spamming it everywhere; and then, some jackass called "buriednexttoyou" began to spam it with with a bunch of retarded nonsense. So yeah, it's time to stop.
posted by cribcage at 6:45 AM on November 4, 2005

Oh I get it. I bet he's having trouble with the uploadr. Sometimes it hangs on to tags from upload to upload. Did anyone drop the guy a note? I did.

Stavros: Er, um indeed.
But I already used my MeTa this week...

Thanks for calling this out. I almost made this post last night but decided not to.
posted by puke & cry at 7:21 AM on November 4, 2005

I like the idea. Buriednexttoyou has indeed made it annoying. I've only encountered craniac's repeats in the thread below and in this one, so they haven't (yet) annoyed me any.
posted by OmieWise at 7:42 AM on November 4, 2005

I removed the comments. So very lame.

"Sure, calling me out for being weirdly lame and annoying is something you can do, but did you know you could also view Metafilter users on Flickr using my 'tehsuck' tag?"

Blech. I'm untagging my photo out of pathetic spite.
posted by tpl1212 at 8:04 AM on November 4, 2005

After this, and seeing buriednexttoyou's gimmick photos in the metafilteruser tag, I'm untagging mine. This is why we can't have nice etc. etc. etc.

On preview: and spite! Can't forget spite.

I apologize for being a knob end.

Please think of the children before untagging. The children.

Please think of the children before untagging.

I did, and the children don't like buriednexttoyou's "performance art."
posted by tpl1212 at 8:38 AM on November 4, 2005

I thought buriednexttoyou just tagged *all* of his photos with metafilter user (hopefully by mistake)...was that not actually the case?
posted by hototogisu at 8:44 AM on November 4, 2005

looks like he untagged them now.

I forgive craniac for one excellect reason:

I had never heard of someone being derisively called a "knob end" before. a knob? nob? sure. but not knob end.

maybe it's because I've never been to England, despite my fervent wish to do so.

all is forgiven, craniac. And yes, I speak for everyone on this.

Yeah, it was a mistake. I emailed him about it and he figured it out and untagged them. I ♥ Craniac.
posted by jessamyn at 8:57 AM on November 4, 2005

shmegegge, you knobend, you don't speak for me. (Although I was never upset in the first place.) Also, I saw a big crane driving on the road yesterday that had "putz meister" on the back of it. I think it was actually the company name.

It's true. He passed around a greeting card and everything.

It's mildly annoying, in my opinion, but not warranting a callout. I mean, he was just enthusiastic about getting people to participate in this neat idea he had about mefites' photos. It was clearly with good intentions and no malice, or even reckless disregard for others. Meanwhile, real malice flows through all of MetaFilter like a river. But, hey, craniac himself seems to think that he needs a timeout, so I won't contradict him.

Please, Knob End must be two words. Knobend just ruins it.
posted by klarck at 9:45 AM on November 4, 2005

to use the "craniac is a knob end" tag, it has to be included in quotation marks--just a tip.

Also, I would like a copy of the Crane with "putzmeister" on the back, if anyone gets a shot. It perhaps should be uploaded with the "craniacisaknobend" tag as well for future reference.

Untagging your photo's as a result? Just as lame.

I apologize for being a knob end.

I'll remove me 'craniac is a knob end' tags immediately. I have a horrible feeling I insulted your wife on AskMe recently too. It really is nothing personal craniac, I swear!

Still, some good has come of this - I haven't seen so many uses of the term knob end (apologies for earlier word collision) since I was about seven.

I had never heard of someone being derisively called a "knob end" before
It's a Scouse thing, as far as I know (or, rather, a Birkenhead thing in my case).

posted by jack_mo at 10:38 AM on November 4, 2005

He already apologized. Sheesh.

And knobend has to be one word in this context. A knob end is just the end of a knob. As evidence, this will be entered in the record as Exhibit A.

"not warranting a callout? It was noise in the threads he posted in."

Yeah, but it wasn't malicious noise. It wasn't willfully careless or reckless noise. It was well-intentioned noise.
It's the kind of thing you kindly correct, not get angry or abusive over. Anyway, that distinction makes a big difference to me, for whatever reason.

C'mon, languagehat, it's either two words or hyphened, because it clearly hasn't reached the type of common usage required for conjunction. It's like dick end or cock end, which should be clear in context. (If you prefer, dick-end and cock-end).

Heh. At least, that's what William Safire would say.

I don't have any tattoos, sarge ;-)

Ah, bellend/bell end/bell-end. On the path to my primary school there was a massive bit of graf that said 'Robbo has a dead cheesy bell end and is a prick', illustrated with the traditional spunking cock and hairy balls, helpfully labelled 'Robbo' for the illiterate passer-by. Weirdly, no one washed it off the entire time it was there, so a generation of Birkenhead school-children learnt how to swear wonderfully on their way to the first day of school. (Though this being Birkenhead, I suppose most of them could swear like fishwives already...)

Knobshine was another favourite, I remember.

Ah, memories.
