cortex records matthewchen is spamming March 28, 2006 8:04 PM Subscribe
This is a litle weird, maybe, but so cool I wouldn't want anyone to miss it before it drops off the MeTa front page. adamrice said 'matthewchen is spamming', so I said 'there's a jangly, wistful guitarpop song somewhere in the phrase 'mathewchen is spamming'....' and cortex agreed and went ahead and recorded the song. How cool is that? I love this place sometimes.
That is pretty cool. I listened to it in the thread of the same name. wouldn't it be cool if all metatalk posts gave birth to such creativity.
Like I'm sure everyone else that wanted to listen to it could go there and hear it.
Why is this callout worth three lines worth of Metatalk space, thus forcing other stuff down, when the post you're praising is only 4 posts down?
*lights the villagers, and pitchforks the rope*

As I said in the other thread, someday there could well be a Metafilter: The Album, though don't quote me on that.

Well, it's pretty damned new; I just launched it in mid-Februarary. On the other hand, it has gotten a little mefi love, so really the only thing to blame here is your lack of obsessive, completist Metafilter reading.
I'll probably post it to Projects once I feel like it's really and truly out of beta.

Dramatis personae:
- Josh
- Josh's brother, for extra clapping
- a completely unreplaceable beater acoustic guitar
- a Hohner Blues Harp MS
- a Studio Projects B1 condensor mic
- a pair of Sennheiser HD-280 headphones
- a yamaha MG10/2 mixer
- an M-Audio FastTrack USB breakout box
- Adobe Audition 1.5
- a laptop
I wrote the song on the way to pick up some take-out sushi, walking down the street and trying out lines about spamming and words that rhymed with 'filter and generally looking like the quieter sort of crazy person to anyone who passed me.
Recording:
- I layed down a rhythm track on guitar against the click track, did the two guitar lead bits, layed down the harmonica.
- Commenced to singing: did lead vocals, did a shadow track of that, threw it out, did another shadow track that diverged at the move into the chorus and became the harmony track.
- Sang the ah-ahs next, good-enough job.
- Cleanup -- silenced empty bits of the tracks to knock out ambient traffic sound (downtown apartment, cars always whispering by), threw greater or lesser amounts of compression on the vocals and guitar to tighten things up a little.
- Distortion applied to the harmonica track to make it a little more consistent in volume and give it that nice blues-rock tone.
- Started clapping. Called brother -- he lives next door in the building -- and made him come clap too. Did a couple more tracks jingling my keys and a handful of coins. Wondered why I don't own a tambourine.
- Stopped to eat dinner with wife, who pointed out that the sushi was getting warm.
- Came back, finished up the mix, listened, tweaked, listened again, saved as wave, threw at WinLAME to encode mp3, tagged mp3, uploaded to fileserver, reloaded thread, prayed it wasn't closed in the interim.
Probably about an hour's work, total.

Has anyone else heard the cortex/victors mix of "Things Fall Apart"? I LOVE it. I downloaded it from music.metafilter. Which I miss. Where is it?

It has been pointed out to me by my spouse that the aforementioned harmonica and clapping/jingling parts were not in the matthewchen song, but rather the Times' Lem obit. We regret the error.

That's the sort of statement that thrills me to the bone. The day I walk down the street and hear a stranger humming one of the songs, I will be as complete as Tom Cruise at the end of Jerry McGuire. And I won't be a Scientologist.

My question, since he hasn't posted in this thread: does he know he's (Meta-)famous?
