This is exactly what I come to MeFi for: something I haven't seen anywhere else followed by interesting/funny/thought provoking discussion. Since when has "too NSFW" been grounds for deletion? Its not in the guidelines. And "too NSFW" for whom? Matt or Jess? Or the gentle sensibility of the readers? Which readers.

This whole thing stinks.

Yeah, goatse gets a free pass, but a penis labeled NSFW doesn't.

There's only one solution. We must all post in-thread pics of our wangs.

Girls without wangs of their own to photograph and post can easily one for free simply by asking the first male they meet if they can have a picture of their wang to post on the internet.

I was fascinated by the post - made me want to check out the rest of the BBC series, actually. Indeed, free the giant plastic penis!

The only thing that threw me (and I'm really trying to forget about it) is the link to the cutting-off-a-penis photos posted in the comments. Actually, it was a link to a link within a previous thread that provided fair warning.

It's that fair warning that's the problem: Though I know I'll regret it profoundly, I can't not clink on an NSFW link (unless I'm, y'know, at work).

Speaking of bullshit, ChasFile's one word post on this was itself bullshit. You can disagree without calling the admins here assholes.

You seem to be committing the fundamental attribution error: the tendency for people to over-emphasize dispositional, or personality-based, explanations for behaviors observed in others while under-emphasizing the role and power of situational influences on the same behavior. In other words, people tend to have a default assumption that what a person does is based more on what "kind" of person he is, rather than the social and environmental forces at work on that person.

The action in question - the deletion of the post - was bullshit. At no time did I say nor did I intend to imply that the person behind the action was similarly bullshit. Indeed, at the time we didn't even know who was responsible.

Just about everyone else seemed to get that it was the deletion that was lame, not the admins:

This deletion is total BS

Bullshit deletion. It's incredibly gross, but still interesting.

This is why MetaFilter is awesome. The deletion is lame.

And on and on. These comments, the many others like them, and my original post all decry the particular action in question, and aren't personal attacks on the admin who took that action.

I think both the admins generally do a great job but screwed this one up. You can find a further explanation of my position two comments from the top. HTH, and thanks for playing. I guess that was my first kind of mini-call-out, since it takes place in a MeTa thread, which is kind of exciting.

All that said, this thread now makes no sense, since the original post is back up, so it should probably just be deleted.
posted by ChasFile at 9:13 PM on March 29, 2006 [1 favorite]

Springboarding into more serious discussion, I think there may be a built in asymmetry in the flagging process, in that people are more likely to flag a post as 'bad' than 'fantastic'. Maybe there should be a 'don't delete' flag, so people can react to controversial posts in a way that anticipates your likely reaction with an opinion that more fits their attitude. Not many here seem to think it was a great post, just one that didn't demand execution.

These things come in waves and a few silly FPPs doesn't mean MeFi is "beneath Fark" (is that even possible?) or that it's the beginning of the end.

If you want to stick to depressingly long Annals of Extremely Complex Foreign Policy articles, by all means do so. But to claim that we've all lost it and become a frathouse and uninteresting, etc, is raw folly: I still come here first thing in the morning, and I suspect you do as well. frankly, one guy posts a "hey look at that guy's dick it's as big as a football", the admin does the only thing an admin can, ie he deletes it, and then people start a small nerd riot because they want it back? best of the web indeed.

The users of this site are for the most part extremely intelligent and literate, but that dosen't mean we don't enjoy raunch and vulgarity as much as anyone. In fact, our intelligence makes us that much better at it. And there are other times when posters remind us that even our crudest jokes about some internet weirdo are aimed at real people. My point is this: both vulgarians and the more professorial among us serve a purpose, as do both those drives within ourselves.

... and the funny-gibe contest still goes to stavrosthewonderchicken. I hereby award a one inch bonus.

Also: Metafilter: Assume it lost all of its normal functioning years ago.

I didn't have a problem with the FPP. Yeah, it was pretty gross but it didn't need to be deleted. But at the same time I wasn't the least bit fazed or upset about its deletion. It was just sort of amusing that the deletion garnered such a strong reaction from people, and that Matt actually relented when he doesn't usually do so. There are times when I understand and agree with people being upset about a post being deleted (e.g. the graphic pictures of dead Iraqis in Fallujah), but the silicone engorged dick disappearing from the front page was a nonissue, at least to me *shrug*.

Dear Matteo, I sincerely apologize if i offended you. I am myself offended when someone posts that stupid fucking goatse image and feel like I need to wash my eyes in boiling water.

I considered this when I posted my link, but the image was so weirdly desexualized, it might has well have been a rabbit or a pumpkin that he pulls from his pants.

Friends ?

You mean it wasn't a pumpkin. That must mean. . . oh God.

The FPP has apparently been un-deleted.

"Who was it?"
"He didn't say."

that was a totally unnecessary instance of being mean to me.

Well, it may not have been intended as mean, per se. Could have just been gently sarcastic, which passes for nice around here.
