If more people would BUY the books instead of just taking PICTURES of them, maybe he would have more time to spend with us, no?

I was hoping to post a Portugal meetup thread, with pictures, but Miguel and I missed each other. I even ended up having dinner with friends at a restaurant nearby the hotel where Miguel and I had planned to have drinks.
And, yes, all my Portuguese friends assured me that *everyone* knows who Miguel is - he is quite famous and is indeed one of Portugal's two or three most well-known authors.

As the portuguese comments on that picture point out, his most famous book is "As Causas das Coisas" (The Cause of Things) which they can't keep in stock.

I recently noticed another cardoso on Metafilter whose blog is in Portuguese. Of course, I've got a bad case of apophenia this weekend.

Neither amazon.com nor amazon.co.uk list any books by him in English translation. Pity, I'd read a few if I could.

These kids don't know what it was like. We had to hand-code posts in Z80 assembly language, and walk five miles in the snow to do it.

And every one of those books is based on information he got from his Metatalk questions. But do we see any cashflow? No.

Huh. I thought his most famous work was entitled "Como é todos fazer aqui neste Web site?", loosely translated as "How's everybody doing on this here website?", a collection of his greatest MetaTalk threads...

He was so funny here I would bet his books are great reads. I too mourn the lack of an English translation, not enough to learn Portuguese though.

Back in the old days, nobody really knew HTML, so there wasn't any sense in asking if Migs had a grasp of it.
And ColdChef was merely the deputy's assistant of Anti-Miguel Land.

That'd be sweet. And one day when he was away from his computer, we could switch his preferences over to the plain text theme.

Neat. Thanks for the link.
Seconded.
To this day (some four years later) I feel guilty about giving him a hard time. Nothing more to add, really. I'm pretty sure he still lurks, so...Miguel, I'm sorry.
Also, alas, seconded.

Miguel will always be MetaFilter to me.
Death is MetaFilter to me.
Just had to tie that one up.

If you're making the Saramago reference I think you are: borderline tenuous but excellently played, good sir.

Not that I post that much here myself, these days.
I wanna know what that scamp has been up to whilst he has been absent.

Miguel was my captain, and I his acolyte. He personifies everthing I once held dear about Metafilter, and everything I envy in the world and wish for my own: eruditon, ribaldry, aesthetics, gentility, wisdom, and the ability to not take oneself too seriously. Such things may not be prized in these contentious days, but Miguel embodied them, and much more, often to his detriment. I miss him, and wherever he hangs his hat tonight, I wish him good luck, a good smoke, and a cold martini.

I enjoyed MiguelCardoso's activity on the site, though I admit to finding languagehat's occasional imitations of MiguelCardoso's style pretty entertaining.
Luckily some of Miguel Esteves Cardosos's work is available in German, so I might even read it some day if I'm curious enough. I hope the translation is good.
