Likely self-link. [mi]
posted by Malor to Etiquette/Policy at 2:16 AM (120 comments total)

Poster has 4 short comments, first link is promotional. I don't want to post the actual links and boost his pagerank, but whois shows that the linked domain (googlyeyes) and the domain in the poster's profile (devil makes three) are both in 'santa cruz, ca' in lower case. Not an absolute smoking gun, but I'd bet $50 this is a self-link in one form or another.

Also, googlyeyesoncock.com is one of the most egregious wastes of world wide web in the whole internet. Tim Berners-Lee would be spinning in his grave, if he was dead and in a grave.

It was worth it all just for this (nsfw):

Whether or not it's a self-link (I suppose it could be a friend's site, although it does have that whiff of the self-link about it), I think Jonson's comment in the original, broken thread still stands. Just take out the word non-existent.

Okay, you people need to chill. I thought this website was pretty funny. It's not my website, though I have met the guy who made it (santa cruz (lowercase *gasp!*) is a small town).
I tried posting this on Digg a while ago, and ran into similar angry people. I thought that MeFi might have A bit more of a sense of humor, but apparently not.
So unless living in the same town as the owner of the domain counts as self-linking, just relax.

Dude, bro. You just told MetaFilter - a bunch of bookish, nerdly, poindexters if there ever was one - to "relax".

You might as well have typed "Please crawl right up my bunghole with your quantum supercomputing time machine thingy and tell me what size shoes my great-great-grandchildren will wear." or "I like pancakes and tar and feathers and a good pitchfork-waving angry mob. Please tar and feather me and make chum out of my wibbly bits."

That being said, MetaFilter has a sense of humor. It's ginormous. It eats planets. Digg has no sense of humor.

However, googly eyes on cocks just isn't that funny. Really. Sure, it's amusing. But there's barely even one gallery there and, well, most of them seem to be shots of the same odd looking dong in various poses and costumes. Yawn, man, yawn.

Anyway, whatever it is it's hardly ready for MeFi.

loquacious:

Would you please not inline pictures of cocks on MeTa! I'm not ordering you or anything, and I know that you may be one of those folks who think nobody should browse from work, or perhaps one of those folks who think that workplaces should be more mellow and therefore cock-pictures are their problem and not my problem, but this MeTa isn't tagged as NSFW, and thus it would be really really nice if you would avoid doing that. Link it, like Jessamyn did with the cockchicken, but, please, not inline.

And, again, yes, I know this is my problem, and not yours, and that we have cows pissing or with cats coming out of their asses, and that therefore there is no set-in-stone justification for me imposing my desires on you, which is why this is just a humble but impassioned request. Help a brother out.

Also, maryh, what's the problem with favoriting a thread about you? Maybe he wants to be able to quickly return. I have favorited metatalk threads about me so I can find them easily because they tend to be a barrel of laughs. So what?

davy - be careful popping in images that are hosted on other sites. If you do choose to inline an image here, you should copy it to your own web host first. Not only does this spare some poor soul out there from the bandwidth costs we incur displaying the image here, it ensures that they don't replace the image with a goatse that says "quit stealing my bandwidth fuckers," which would take the place of your hot sauce jpg for all to enjoy.

/not that I care

But seriously, MeFi does need to do something to keep itself distinct. If it turns into a collection of single links, and comments that consist only of images, what's that make it?

Thanks scarabic for the advice. Though I did try to moot that in advance by pointing to pictures other people in effect ripped off already: neither the failed wiki link nor the one that worked went to the site of the hot sauce manufacturer (though I doubt the company would mind the free advertising). See, I don't want people rooting around my web page, what with all the XXX pictures of me there, at least not till they SEND ME MONEY first. And wouldn't a link to my page be a self-link anyway? And to answer your question, what happens on dialup is the image downloads V-E-R-Y S-L-O-W-L-Y; don't you remember those days?

scarabic writes "My guess is that the page html comes in all the way through, so you can still read the thread, you just can't enjoy the massive GIF you profess to hate. Is there some other impact on you?"

What happens for me is I'll load the front page, Meta and Ask. Then I'll whip thru the three pages openning links in new tabs. I'll start reading the first tab while all the other stuff loads in the background, by the time I'm done the first page the others are usually loaded. Unless the second tab is the mushroom thread in which case none of the other tabs have loaded yet.

davy writes "And wouldn't a link to my page be a self-link anyway?"

Self links in comments are OK.
posted by Mitheral at 10:38 AM on August 22, 2006

Further, if'n you are a bastard and don't add size attributes to your image element, some browser implementations will wait until they finish downloading the image in order to "know" the image's dimensions so they can accurately render the page. Thus, I am able to read down to your large-ass unique snowflake of a contribution to the thread but then have to wait for the image to download before continuing on.

To be clear, I'm not arguing against inline images—they often make me roflcopter. I am asking that the community refrain from inlining frickin' 1+MB files that are cliched tripe I've seen plastered all over the net and had forwarded to me by 27 of my closest friends in the last five years. Baring that, since I know I ask too much from some of you wacky hipster types, how about a little less cock bucketing when presented with the horrifying fact that not everyone in the community has broadband, much less having even the opportunity to acquire broadband service. There are more meaningful battle lines to draw without falsely painting myself and others as willful Luddites. Trust me, if I could get DSL or cable at the farm I would do so faster than a monkey can down his own spunk.

I would do so faster than a monkey can down his own spunk.

MeTa is so much better than MeFi.

Wow, there are really folks here who think MeFi hasn't always been ok with links to penises and other smut on the front page.

Wow.

Trust me, if being a "jolly prankster" was all i had in mind, my HD is filled with gifs and jpgs I could link to that would make your mortal eyes pop like so many Peeps in a microwave.

Upon reflection, loquacious, I hope for your sake this is not true, because if it is, all it means is a big important piece of you has died before the rest, and winks and pouts and beckons to you from the mouth of your own open grave.

Ah yes, many tabs loading at once. I can see how that would compound the problem. In this day and age, it seems a little optimistic to preload multiple pages in tabs. Though now that I think about it, I did a lot of "open link in separate window" back in the day precisely because the net was so slow.

I can see where y'all are comin' from. It's sad that pre-broadband browser limitations (4 sockets, for example) have yet to be changed, and that newer, fancier browsers don't take your needs into account. I'd rail myself hoarse over at Mozilla's boards, though, rather than try to convince everyone to tailor the content of the internets.

So, did anyone determine whether the post in question was indeed a self-link?

Pardon? Because I'm an obsessive-compulsive (if slipshod) archivalist-archetype? There's all kinds of awesome Good Stuff on my HDs as well. What are you on about?

mediareport : "Wow, there are really folks here who think MeFi hasn't always been ok with links to penises and other smut on the front page."

There are? So far, they haven't appeared in this thread. So far this thread is about self-linking, and about inlining images of penises and other smut.
