Mark your contacts September 17, 2006 7:17 PM Subscribe
Highlighting contacts? Would it be possible to highlight the name of anyone you have listed in your contacts? Nothing flashy, just something to draw attention to the poster's name if you are skimming a long thread.
It sounds like a good idea, except when you consider the load it would put on the server to process all the pages against the database of your favorites, and then insert the code around those names. Now multiply that by however many people press "refresh" or load up a new thread at any given moment.

Yeah, it's a bit too much processing to do everywhere, so try the greasemonkey script instead.

Wow, that's works pretty much just as advertised. Thanks monju_bosatsu. I had been putting off installing greasemonkey and this was just the impetus I needed to do it.
And good call on the server issues crunchland, I guess I figured with all the stuff Matt has MeFi doing, it never occurred to me that something so "minor" could have such an impact.
Thanks all.

crunchland: The join really isn't that insane as far as server load goes... unless the database is poorly constructed and/or indexed... and actually you don't even need to do it with a join, cookies would do just fine.

cortex: are you really sure it's because of server load, though, and not because of a bug causing a crash, or a piece of hardware that needs to be replaced?
either way, do it with cookies.. easy peasy and much less server load.

I'm not sure at all, twiggy. Just some light-hearted wood-knocking, not a serious counter-argument.
