What percentage of mefites actually contribute to metatalk? And how popular is ask.me in comparison to the blue?

ok, so does MetaTalk usage follow this same breakdown? are 55% of MetaTalk posts about AskMe, 40% MeFi, 5% meetups, music, jobs, etc? I don't think there's any way to answer that q without going back and reading the whole of MeTa, but I'm curious anyway.

haven't got anything better to do at work today, so maybe we'll see.

I suspect this has something to do with the lack of updates to Projects. Days go by with nothing there and then all of a sudden there are 10 new entries. This is no doubt because Matt approves projects but not music. I used to check daily and then gave up. Now I just go when I remember to.

What baffles me is how little people contribute to MuFi. I know not everyone is a musician here, but I thought more and more people would be commenting on the songs, but it seems like, in average, songs get the same number of comments as they used to in July. It's hard to tell how many are hearing the songs.

Perhaps another cool statistic to have in Mufi would be Most Downloaded songs. I bet a lot of people download songs even if they don't favorite them or add them to a playlist.

Well, it does take more of a commitment to sit through a song than to read a comment; that probably has a lot to do with it. Also, I'd bet some (many?) folks feel less comfortable judging someone else's musical creation than they do judging their written comments. And finally, I mentioned a couple of days ago that the persistent tabs problem mentioned here keeps me from spending as much time as I'd like listening to and commenting on Mefi Music tunes.

Funny, I bet you are right, but I never thought of it that way before. And I do understand why someone wouldn't feel comfortable judging somebody else's music, yet, in my case at least, I'd love to hear (or read, rather) what people thought of the songs I posted.

I think the time investment is a conspicuous deterrent to heavy commentary on Music. There's probably no way to "fix" that short of having a lot more people actively listening to and commenting on Music, which may or may not happen over time naturally. I wonder if traffic at Projects has shown any steady increase over time, since the first month or so?

Matt had mentioned the idea of a This Week In MefiMusic type of column a while back, but I haven't followed up since that first email exchange—something like that, with a slice of visibility on the front page, might help get non-regulars of the subsite more involved, maybe push the site closer to the kind of critical mass that would lead to significant commentary on the majority of songs.

I wish that more Music posters would provide their own commentary, really; it's something that I haven't been thorough about myself, but I like to know a bit about how and why something was recorded, where it came from, etc. I enjoy that sort of background—and I suspect that such artist commentary might prompt more interesting and varied discussions than "I do [not] like this". Give folks something to hook into, and give us production/songwriting/instrumental nerds some detail in which to revel and from which to learn!

Funny cortex, again, I didn't think of it like that before, but I think you gotta be right, we are not involving the listeners at MuFi as much as we could.

Speaking for myself, I chose not to do it, cause I didn't wanted to come across as being pushing myself before the songs. I kinda wanted to let the song speak for itself. But I think we all have that credits-nerd inside of us and we would all love to read how it was recorded, with whom, why, why in English, why with ukuleles. Is that a real cow in the background? - all that.

And as for the "this week in MuFi" thang, it sounds awesome. Perhaps it could be a little box inside the "1, 2, 3, 4, 5, years ago sideblog" in the Front Page. I'd love to see that materialize. How do we lobby it?

this feature is already installed, with a bonus pony of picking DJs you already know and love. check to see if your contacts have playlists saved. if they do, there you go. if they don't, browse around. check out the playlists of the folks who post songs. check out jessamyn's playlists.

now, being able to favorite playlists is a pony I could ride.
