sorry, signal, I do miss it. The most spontaneous bursts of laughter I've experienced have been prompted by squirrels playing harmonicas while dancing and the like. Not precisely a homo superior kinda humor, I know, but still good laughs.

It really worries me. Now I have to wade through 4chan and Something Awful to get my funny gifs. Metafilter used to be something of a...err... filter for my gif needs, and now it's gone. It was like Christmas to find a thread full of gifs, some of them MeFi exclusives. A treasure trove of internet memes.
And what of self-linkers in front page posts (FPPs)? Snark is all that's left as a community based reprimand. The existence of the img tag has made ya'll complacent in snarking skillz. I hoped to be able to lurk without worry. "Oh, if someone self-links they'll get gifed and thus feel the full wrath of the community." Now I'll feel compelled to participate in self-linked threads and be a snarker myself! And I'm just a five dollar n00b!
So what now? Any ole Joe Internet Viral Marketing Company can pay their 5 dollars, self-link in a FPP and then be banned by Matt. But how will it be now that they cannot be scolded by pissing/shitting elephants and/or ceiling cat and other gifs that probably go over their heads anyways? Now anyone can self-link and all that is left is snark.
I don't know... I don't know if the old timers are up to high level snark anymore. I don't know if the middle timers even care. And certainly us n00bs haven't had enough study in the art as to be effective. But perhaps there will be a rennaisance. Perhaps the insult of the written word will make a comeback. Perhaps I can go back to lurking until it's 2008 and I feel that I can write comments without feeling like a brash youngerster on a weblog of giants. Heros and giants.

I'm all for images, even though I spent my formative internet years (~91-~96) making tons of ascii art. I do wish they weren't restricted, but I understand and accept the reasons.

I absolutely miss it. It was definitely abused at times, but so is alchohol and we saw what happened when we tried to ban that.

You know, for somebody with more energy than me, it'd be easy-as-piss to whip up a greasemonkey thingy/FF extension that would take linked images and rewrite them as inline thumbnails or full size inline images, and then those who really really really want to have inline images could. Barring a return of the img tag.

I hope it comes back soon. It gets abused sometimes, but I think people have made me laugh with great images far more often than they have churned my stomach with awful ones. In the big all image fests there are lots of boring images which make it hard to load the thread, but those are few and far between. All things in moderation, and I think the moderation on this to this point has been especially good. Matt has a good handle on that balance between the fun and serious aspects of the site which make it so compelling.
