I would like to make a passionate argument for or against tags on metatalk, but frankly I don't care... except in the extremely limited sense that I enjoy a good and utterly pointless debate. Now that is not me saying "Hey look at me I don't care, look how cool I am in my hundred dollar bluejeans and sunglasses designed by committee in the name of an Italian sexual invert, my irony is diamond hard." I mean, I care, I care a lot but I don't care about tags on metatalk to the point where I think they would be useful, because they wouldn't be useful... Not even to stop people from posting what does the "." mean or what happened to images or the other ceaseless repeats of the same issues, not going to work. Is there some other reason to have tags on metatalk?
Actually this is what I'm saying "Hey look at me, I ate a shitload of deviled eggs last night, damn those things are good, but hard on the organs of digestion and elimination, you have to be prepared to man up if you eat more than five of those fellers, imho."

This is what I would like.
- a way to indicate a specific user or a thread, built into the metatalk posting system, so there would be some shorthand way to see "this thread is about user/thread" Not everyone's metatalk posts are as clear as this one.
- a way to percolate meetup threads to someplace easy to spot (this mostly works now, but it's not perfect)
- some sort of "Are you asking why your X was deleted? Pease try emailing an admin first if you really just want that question answered. If you'd like to fight about it by all means go ahead and hit POST"
- a way to indicate that some threads are resolved without just closing them, or something. Closing seems final, but if the OPs question has been answered and there's nothing else to talk about, it seems like it might be a good idea to have those threads be resolveable/hideable maybe in the tab system "only open Meta threads" or something
But really, I mostly like it the way it is. I'm not sure exactly what tags would add here.

Just as metatalk serves as a place to get totally silly in comments, it might be good to add tags just so folks can exercise their unique-snowflakeness in a way that doesn't affect the blue.

Here's the real reason I want tags on MeTa: the metafilterhistory tag. Check it out on MeFi here and on AskMe here. I think it's absolutely wonderful, and it really adds to the sense of community (a sappy cliche that I don't use lightly). There are plenty of landmark threads on MeTa that deserve the same immortalization. That's why I want tags on MeTa.

That's true, but before there were tags there was the wiki and I don't see why the list of noteworty metatalk posts couldn't be maintained there.
In fact having it on the wiki might even be better, since anyone can edit that, whereas only Matt and Jessamyn can edit tags. (Although this is countered by the lack of knowledge of the existance of the wiki page compared to tags.)

They would give Languagehat a way to read flameout after flameout when the need comes upon him. He could just click on the "flameout" tag, and have them at his fingertips. :)
For myself, I'd rather have more choices of flags. For instance "being an asshat" would be a great flag. There are time when it's really hard to decide if someone is being more of a derail, a noise or posting offensive content. "being an asshat" is capable of covering all of those and more.

Hmm. It's hard to know how to treat this situation, as a matter of etiquette. dios asks in the other thread that criticism be made of behavior here, and to criticize specifically the person whom dios considers to have behaved badly toward him. So, if I said in that thread, "Yeah, dios, Hat Maui was a jerk in that [meaning this] thread," I don't think I'd have done right by dios.
On another hand, too, I'm growing pretty fond of a lot of felix betachat's points in this MetaTalk thread about a post made when Ted Haggard resigned, and I think its points—at least those I agree with—begin now to bear on my behavior in MetaFilter at large.
If I may say, so, sir, you seem to have a personal interest in tracking the members' behavior and the site's history, based on ReFi and a more general impression of you I've gathered over time, and I do wonder whether you consider threads individually uncolored by participants' opinions or behavior in other threads to be an ideal for the site. Is it proper for us to disregard others' commentary elsewhere? Is it okay for us to disregard our own behavior, then, and to expect each thread to be considered anew?
