What if the etiquette/policy category didn't exist on MeTa? More within....

Why cant we start some sort of listserv and do it through email for the people who want to have the flameouts and argue about stuff. Or why cant they just email the admins about it and not drag it into a public arena.? I mean MeTa is fine with the meetup posts and the "Hey cool MeFi/Meta/AskMe..etc. was featured in...."posts, and general questions/bugs. My question is, is it logical to start a email discussion list to replace the etiquette/policy category of MeTa? Remember, digests are your friends.

I read your question this way: "What if the etiquette/policy category didn't exist on MeTa?" And I was all ready to pop in here with a withering reference to your questionable heredity and then a double-smalled "How could you tell the difference?"

Ah, what could have been.

Then the callouts/complaints/whining/etc. would happen within the threads themselves in the blue & green.

I just think there could be another outlit for all the yapping and crapping. I think thats why taz created Metachat way back when, not for this reason mind you, but still the example stands. Or we can create another section of the site, MetaHell (:We take Flameouts litterally! people can argue, deblate about stuff and leave Meta to nice positive stuff. Just some ideas.

If there wasn't an established etiquette, how would a community form? How would there be self-policing?

There has to be some mechanism to publicly display the standards. If the standards are not known, they don't exist. And this site would have to be exclusively turned over to benevolent moderators.

My feeling is that MetaTalk serves a wonderful service of decanting borderline-appropriate joshing, clusterfucks, ribbing and dick jokes away from places where it would cause trouble: AskMe and to a lesser extent MeFi. I've been thinking about this a lot lately.

I do think people could treat MeTa as slightly less of their own personal kiddie pool to pee in as they see fit, but it's nice to have a place on site where people can get questions answered and even call out other people or mathowie and me. If this stuff happens over email, everyone complains that it's all cloak and dagger behind the scenes backroom stuff. Having it be above board adds to the transparency that we're mostly hoping to have with how the site runs.

I like the idea of a MetaHeaven. It'd be like a rubber room filled with fluffy things and holding hands, soft pillows and soothing music. Kind of like Cute Overload on Valium, Remeron, Thorazine and Clozaril. The background colour should be #CCFFFF. The text, #FF99FF. A place for escaping, for dribbling all over your keyboard. If you'd like to blow soap bubbles with your mind, pet a duckling, feed a cat - come on down to MetaHeaven. "I think EngineBeak seemed like a nice fellow." "I love neu." "Oooh maaan... Remember that guy? I loved him."

Yes, I like this idea. Plus it'd probably lead to some insane flameouts over here.

What if Santa crashes before he gets to my house?

Short Imagined Monologues --

Professor Richard Dawkins Speaks at Fair Hills Kindergarten Regarding Santa Claus, December 2, 2006:
"If you are the sort of person who is interested in the truth, perhaps you would consider asking yourself this question: how exactly does a single elderly man not only manufacture but also deliver in a single evening what would, by all forms of logic, account to be millions of toys? Certainly, if you press this issue to its core, more difficult questions will arise, but as I have been told we are short on time, we’ll stick with the meat and bones, so to speak, of this one. Your parents and teachers will most likely say something to the effect of 'Why, he has elves that help build toys year-round in his North Pole workshop.' And in response to how a man delivers all these goods in a single evening? Unsurprisingly, the response to this has not changed since I was a lad: he does it with the aid of Christmas Magic. Indeed—Christmas Magic, that wonderful, majestical force. A single drop of it allows a man to fly around the world in a sleigh led by nine tiny reindeer. Fascinating, isn’t it? Now, before I continue on, let me first make it clear that I am not claiming that the existence of Santa or wonderful industrious elves or Christmas Magic is impossible. I cannot prove that they do not exist any more than I can disprove the existence of fairies or leprechauns. What I can tell you is that statistic probability and science can provide us with a clear look at the truth, and if we are willing to be honest with ourselves as a result of this data, then we will quite quickly see that there simply is no scientific foundation for any of the aforementioned phenomena."

Instead of your errant post getting silently filtered away, it's up to the community to reinforce its own norms. It can be a brutal process, but not any more brutal that the accusations of karma whoring on Slashdot, and it comes with much less interface baggage." [empasis mine]

The linked site is a dead parrot, so here's the archive.org link to the article.

Jessamyn said "My feeling is that MetaTalk serves a wonderful service of decanting borderline- appropriate joshing, clusterfucks, ribbing and dick jokes away from places where it would cause trouble: AskMe and to a lesser extent MeFi. I've been thinking about this a lot lately."

Peccavi. Mea maxima culpa.

Sugarfish posted a question demanding "Help me find a queen sized bed." I tried to quip "How big is the queen?" to find Jessamyn had yanked my posting rights already. And I was sober!

So is it okay to bring up my thing for big round butts here? And what's a clusterfuck? Is there a cover charge? And is it true that you're not a size queen if it's less than 8 inches?

Instead of your errant post getting silently filtered away, it's up to the community to reinforce its own norms.

The Mongolian clusterfucks are the best, just slightly edging out the circle jerks.

Behold the power of the mob!

The distinction between 'mob' and 'assembly of concerned citizens' is often an arbitrary one, it seems.

What if I was late to wish dame a happy birthday?

What if I want people to leave the coffeeshop that I work in so that I can brew coffee in peace? Can't they see that I have dishes to do? And that if I had just one free hour, I could get started on organizing the store room? But NO. They want a small cappuccino.

Don't they know that a small cappuccino is completely obnoxious to make because I have to foam more milk than I use and waste more than half of it to do it properly? Can't we just have large be the standard size?

Oh, this isn't MetaCoffee. Sorry.

I mean, a good flameout is good for the soul.
