Users who post AskMe questions but never answer others' appear self-centred and unsociable. What about a user who answers a tonne of questions, but never asks any? Is that user a know-it-all?
I think these observations reflect mainly on one user.

jessamyn said it best on metatalk a couple weeks ago (but I'm too lazy to look it up): either you have a pressing question that you can't find answers for anywhere else, or you don't.
I've posted a handful of answers on AskMe. A few tour-de-force's on topics I actually know something about, and a lot of not-extremely-helpful-but-well-intentioned one-liners. I haven't asked a question yet because, well, I don't have any yet.

It annoys me a little when people ask questions in a sequence (like they have something on their mind over series of questions) and they don't respond to the answers. There was a guy a while back who joined seemingly to ask questions (nothing wrong with that) and they were a sequence of "How can I bulk up" "What about this supplement to boost muscle-growth" "How do I loose weight in a particular area". All these questions were fine, but it seemed obvious that he had some misconceptions about weight-training and diet and didn't seem to say much when people gave him good advice.

I'm one that answers but doesn't ask too often. Luckily, there isn't a whole lot that either A - can't be answered by already searching the AskMe or B - I can't find elsewhere. Answering is fun and a good mental break for me.

I honestly don't care that much about q:a, despite bringing it up on occasion. Heck, I think I visit MePro more often than AskMe.
I usually do it to tweak members who display that $5 sense of entitlement in "Why was my question deleted?" MeTas. Despite the "lightheartedness" of this MeTa I'm going to stop doing it if only to prevent other people from thinking I'm serious and that they are not alone in the pettiness.

I used to both ask and answer. Now I mostly just answer. Due to the two-week limit, I really need to save my questions for work emergencies (I have four totally different jobs, the the possibility for emergencies is always present.) It's irritating, cause I have some leisure-activity questions I want to ask, but I don't dare. I'd kick myself if I did that -- and then I had to wait two weeks to deal with a work emergency.
I'm NOT criticizing Matt's decision. But that's the effect it has on me.
But it's still fun to answer questions, and I hope I'm helpful when I do so.

If you are calling out a specific user, please feel free to do that. Otherwise the answer, like answers to most other vague questions is "it depends." Seriously, if you think someone is asking too many questions, don't answer them. I'm not sure how anyone could lob a question like this into MetaTalk, considering how MetaTalk has been lately, and consider it really light hearted. That said, this AskMe pecadillo is low on my list of gripes. Higher gripes include
- clearly not even trying to use Google/search engine of choice
- "" spellcheck
- rants masked as questions
- rants masked as answers
- people who call the OP an asshole
- vague questions where the OP never comes back to give more information
- questions where the OP says "X is not an option" when X is pretty clearly what they need to do to solve their problem
That said, I think "anonymous bog" is my new favorite phrase to describe this place.

I do everything through RSS to see what's new and the My Comments page to track threads in which I've commented.

Everyday, sometimes twice a day, I read through all of the AskMe questions and most of them, I have no hope of answering. I don't know that movie you saw that once with that guy in it or what your neighbors are up to or why your machine is making that noise. I do my best to answer the odd question here or there that I can help with - how to make coffee, what *I* think you should say to that guy who did that thing - because hey, you just asked me, etc.
And in return, I ask random questions about my cat.
If using AskMe in this way is wrong, then I don't want to be right.

The only answer to this two sided question: Enforced question to answer ratios. Assuming 80% of current account numbers either never exist or no longer login that gives us around 10,000 active users. Figure askme's average around 10 answers so 1:10 should be about right. Fall below 1:9 and you won't be able to ask until you answer some more. Get above 1:11 and you'll need to ask a question before you can answer. That'll fix those lollygaggers.

I've never submitted an AskMe. I almost did once, but in searching I found a previous question that was close enough to have an answer in the replies that worked for me. Maybe someday I will. I also do one FPP a year. In the meantime, if I know something that might help, I try to answer.
Then there are people who signed up just for AskMe and that's all they ever use here. I find that a bit odd, but different folks interact with the site in different ways I suppose.

I'm sure that some number of all-answer-no-ask users just find the prospect of posting intimidating. Posting sets you up for a level of scrutiny that you don't have to worry about when you're just commenting. If you just comment, you can totally fly under the criticism radar most days.

I've posted hundreds of answers and asked only five questions. I keep telling myself I need to make better use of askme and there are a number of questions I'm always meaning to post but don't. I think every single question I've posted has been part of an effort to help someone else with a pressing problem and consequently couldn't be put off.
