Well now he can be like a tomato and ketchup!

Or he could make like a tree and leaf the deleted threads to you ;)

Some of those deleted thread reasons are brilliant. Very entertaining to see them all in one place.

...in other news, Mr. T got a chip stuck in his tooth today and Mr. Belvedere stubbed his toe while gardening. Holy shit that's funny. I can almost taste the derision dripping from it.

Hm, I wonder if you can retroactively post stuff on blogger. I'd like to get all those up under their appropriate dates but I really don't know how to do that and I don't have the authority to do it any way. I'll ask bigmusic about it.
posted by bob sarabia at 3:30 PM on January 13, 2007

Yes, you can retro-date posts on Blogger. I have.
posted by cribcage at 3:33 PM on January 13, 2007

"This post was deleted for the following reason: you did not really just link to your own metafilter post form two days ago in this post, you did not seriously do that ... did you?"

Heh. Thanks for this!
posted by languagehat at 3:33 PM on January 13, 2007

Yes, this is good. Thanks!
posted by snsranch at 3:36 PM on January 13, 2007

Ok, I guess I should have poked around blogger a little. Turns out it's really easy to retrodate stuff. Now I know what I'll be doing Sunday.

"Go into the metafilter timeout corner and think about what you did" is my favorite.

"too stupid for metafilter"

Ooo, burn.

(this is good)
posted by shelleycat at 3:56 PM on January 13, 2007

This is fun to look through... Some of the deletion reasons are like works of art...

We should all promise not to click through on any of the self-linkers' links, though... Don't want them getting any residual traffic from their bad behavior.
posted by amyms at 4:04 PM on January 13, 2007

Heh. I think my favorites are the ones where Matt double-posts.
posted by trip and a half at 5:02 PM on January 13, 2007

crap, I hate to do this, but it's Matt's words, so forgive me...

Metafilter: oversensationalized, pointing to dubious sources. Mountains out of molehills.

The deletion reasons are true works of art. I'm so glad they are finally getting a wider audience!

I suppose hindsight is 20/20.

Posted on February 11, 2003 ?

That's foresight rather than hindsight.

Not that it was anything more than shooting fish in a barrel.

And, just for the record: I told you so.

Neato, thanks!
posted by AV at 5:56 PM on January 13, 2007

Upon further examination: what am I doing? posting the worst newsfilter post I can?

Should one feel paranoid or schadenfreude ? That is the question.
posted by y2karl at 5:56 PM on January 13, 2007

So even early on it appears that the whole issue of Canadian Prime Ministers was judged too boring for Metafilter!
posted by clevershark at 6:06 PM on January 13, 2007

Awesome!

It would be really great if "[Link]" was the thread title, though.
posted by Chuckles at 8:15 PM on January 13, 2007

Oh ya.. I really hope you've added noindex/nofollow to those links, otherwise you are increasing the page rank of those self-linking whores..
posted by Chuckles at 8:23 PM on January 13, 2007

Heh. I got mentioned by name on the deletion reason.
posted by jonson at 8:49 PM on January 13, 2007

i like it-- but yeah, ditto on having the thread title as the link text and maybe put the username somewhere.

Name and Shame, people, Name and Shame.

wow, just when I think I can't laugh anymore by what someone's written on MeFi, I come to Mach5's handiwork (nice job btw Mach5 - must have been a labour of love). There are some amazing reasons here. I loves the metastats...
posted by rmm at 10:05 PM on January 13, 2007

It's surprising how many people still try to get away with self-links. Douchebags.

your favorite band sucks and this bad trend stops here.

Oh, just give me a reason to say that to someone, anyone.
posted by Holy foxy moxie batman! at 12:07 AM on January 14, 2007

dear lord i love this. thank you so much.

the mathowie deletion y2karl linked is amazing, btw. anathema sneaking in just before the deletion to say "i saw that, fuckwit!" is very nearly prescient. amazing.
posted by shmegegge at 1:11 AM on January 14, 2007

I really hope you've added noindex/nofollow to those links, otherwise you are increasing the page rank of those self-linking whores.

That's irrelevant. Every deleted thread contains the <meta name="ROBOTS" content="NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW"> header which means that it's not going to be in the search engines' indices no matter how it was linked.

Years back, on Houston Street in New York City, in that former home of the musical avant-garde known as the Knitting Factory, there was a big wall that was completely covered in stacked-up cassette tapes, thousands of them, from floor to ceiling. They were demo tapes containing the music of hopeful bands trying to get a gig at the club. Bands that had all been rejected.

This page of deleted posts is not by a long shot as sad and depressing as that wall, but it reminds me of it nonetheless.

This is a hateful and bitter site and I see nothing good coming from it but spiteful recriminations and attempts at one-upmanships by comparing deletion reasons.

That said, can you insert some air between "[LINK]" and the following block, so I can tell whether the [LINK] belongs to the block above or below? It'll make the page so much more useful. Also a voting form for 'best deletion reason'.
posted by ardgedee at 8:38 AM on January 14, 2007

My favorite so far is this one. It must be nice to be able to go back and pull the plug on your own posts.
posted by koeselitz at 9:59 AM on January 14, 2007

Yeah, I deleted my own usually 3-4 minutes after I posted them. I'd reload the front page, read my post and ask "wtf am I doing here with this crap?" and I'd delete it.

It's fun reading these again. Since very few people saw them, I used to put a lot of effort and snark into them, trying to make the 4-5 people that might see it crack up. Also, I figured the original post author would never see it so I could mock them too.

Done.

Also a voting form for 'best deletion reason'.

Maybe someone else would like to do that?

Awesome! :)

16 "earlier"... variants
38 "already"... somethings
151 "double"
130 "previously" and
458 "posted previously" - :o
Plus a bunch of "meh", "lame" and "dumb"
And these are just the obvious ones - I'd love to be able to do some proper analysis... how about standardised deletion tags?

Favourites:
"I cast the devil out of ye! SMMMAAAAAACKKKK!"
and
"Keanu says whoa, I just had deja vu"

I'll save you time. It's postroad. The only one that might be close is mathowie himself, since it now appears he deleted several of his own threads in the early days. But excluding him, it's got to be Postroad by a mile.
posted by dios at 9:05 AM on January 15, 2007 [1 favorite]

I ran the script but i accidentally shut down before it was done (it takes like 6 hours). I was watching the scroll though, mathowie was actually "winning", with postroad 10 posts behind, however a lot of those were tests.
