Portland Meetup Photos! [NOT OREGONIST]

For some reason, we had the most relaxing meetup in a long time.... I only took a few shots, but there are a lot of spiffy pictures of shiny new mod, cortex.

And why was my mental image of cortex that of a rather large old bald guy, kinda like Col. Kurtz from "Apocolypse Now"?

Hmm... I just realized that link is to an older meet-up, which would explain why there was a shoutout to cortex in it when cortex was at that meetup. Guess it's going to be one those weeks for me.
posted by dios at 7:39 AM on March 26, 2007

Don't worry dios - I got confused, too. The two bars even looked a bit similar, so I was pretty puzzled when I got to the first Baltimore pic and thought "Who are those people? Why didn't I see them? Did they arrive and leave really fast while I was in the restroom?"

Anyway. Great fun. It was very relaxing, perhaps due to a relaxed stroll through a balmy, 45-degree, sunny Portland for an hour or so before meetup time. Great conversation, and I loved meeting some of the people in my neighborhood.

That's because Maine is awesome. We should definitely do this again, and get all those missing Mainers to come out.

Like C_D, clearly you should be at the next one.

I had heaps of fun, thanks all (more photos cortex!!)

I had to read this a few times before the image of jessamyn tossing back tiny cups of jagermeister, sighing, and collapsing back into her chair resolved into a camera.

Me too, carsonb. Until you pointed that out, it hadn't occurred to me that such an interpretation might be incorrect!

How come no one was drinking a Sombrero? Maine meetup indeed. I have it on good authority that the bulk of the people there were From Away.

It's disappointing when the Maine meetup people look normal. Maine meetups should be held someplace like Skowhegan to make them more authentic. Then we could get captions like:

"Tractorpull420, HaulinTraps and sweatyflannel give a shoutout to MunichMachias, who couldn't come because he had to do an extra shift at the mill to help pay his OUI fine."
posted by Mayor Curley at 8:34 AM on March 26, 2007 [3 favorites]

Skowhegan would be great -- it's much closer to my house than Portland.

Is that all Mefites do at meetups, scribble and hold up those dinky little signs? 8 years of a website for this?

It's all about attitude, davy.
posted by Meatbomb at 9:31 AM on March 26, 2007

Speaking of "attitude," when I see sombebody with a nose ring I want to hook on a chain and lead 'em around a parking lot. Except when that person has the power to ban my oh so witty self, in which case I'd be content with practicing my moo. (My doolittling at the State Fair sometimes inspires my "SO" to kick me; I do a better baa though, I can get goats in extended conversations.) But then I do look sharp in overalls and straw hat, so....

It may not be at all clear from the timestamps, but the meetup was about six hours long in all. All we *photograph* at the meetups are the signs; it gives off a nice Mostly Harmless vibe.

I want to hook on a chain and lead 'em around a parking lot.

The last person that I heard say that was my grandmother. Maybe you two would hit it off?

Agree, nursegracer. It's so weird, because I don't live in Maine anymore, but rather New York, and while it's never even occurred to me to go to any of the frequent NYC meetups, I felt and continue to feel jealous that I had to miss the Portland Maine meetup, despite the fact that I haven't lived in the Portland area for a good few years now.

Gritteeeeeeeeees. Mmm, and Granny's. I can't wait until spring when a trip to Maine will make sense!

Wow, Quonsar, is, like, a real person... Trippy.

I mean, don't get me wrong - I always accepted the possibility and everything, I just never thought....

Well, it's kinda like .... I mean, imagine that you're walking down the street one day, nothing real special going on, and then someone just up and shows you a picture of string theory. And they're like, "Yup, string theory. It's totally real. I got a picture of it as I was leaving the bar last night."

And it's like that. You know?

Me: "[W]hen I see sombebody with a nose ring I want to hook on a chain and lead 'em around a parking lot."

Jessamyn: "The last person that I heard say that was my grandmother. Maybe you two would hit it off?"

Actually as long as I stay away from the subjects of politics, religion or sex (yes, I can do that sometimes) I usually do get along well with "cranky" or "outspoken" old women, even when we disagree about something (besides politics, religion or sex). It also takes much less effort than trying to be "nice" or "inoffensive" with almost anybody. And sometimes when I come to know such an old woman better I find out that we don't even disagree all that much about politics, religion or sex. So yes, if your grandmother were to visit Louisville I'd be happy to meet her. I even know a place with nice pies.

Anyhow, Jessamyn, if you took that nose ring remark as a personal attack or insult I apologize; I meant it as a collegial snark, another of my wondrous twitticisms.

(And languagehat, bite me. It's sad that at your age you're still so flattered by being allowed to sit with the K3wl Kidz.)

And oh, generally Metfilter-related but probably not worth a whole new thread: do enough Mefites have JSTOR access to make pointing to something found there worthwhile? (I get it through my public library's web site as a research tool.)
posted by davy at 11:07 PM on March 26, 2007

What, for a front-page post? Hell no.
posted by chrismear at 3:58 AM on March 27, 2007

davy, the lack of either mirrors or bathrooms in those photos is appalling. For shame. But the "portrait of an orgasm" things does ring a bell, yeah—I remember when someone put out a documentary collection of those, to good press, a few years back. Any relation to the Beautiful Agony site, or are they just capitalizing on a good idea when they see it?

And what chrismear said. Great for pointing to inside a thread if it happens to be relevant, but as the meat of a post, not at all. It's bad enough when people link to newspapers with free registrations.

Glad to have re-found this - it rang a bell, because I found comfort in reading it around the same time I was moving to Maine from away.
