Why?
posted by carsonb at 9:35 AM on June 6, 2007

If the aim is to provide a better at-a-glance overview of what the thread is about, can I piggyback that sentiment with a request that people use descriptive titles rather than cute ones? Cute titles make skimming the RSS feed hard.

Since the posting screen already demands that posters make titles descriptive, perhaps admins could treat entirely undescriptive titles as broken, and insert something more suitable.

This is a big issue with tags, too. When the back-tagging project is done there's gonna be a whole half of the archive with descriptive, searchable tags. The other half, though, is fraught with jokey, cute tags that ain't good for nothin' but a cheap gag. Which is one of the reasons I hesitate to hop on this pony, and am asking for a bit more reasoning first.

Anyway, no matter respectful request or flaming demand otherwise, a free-form text entry field will be abused.

Hey, how'd you get to post two metatalk questions in a row?!

I agree with showing the tags on the front page (at least having the option to do so) because I otherwise would not have clicked on the links on this thread (I had nothing to go on because there were no comments at the time).

Great idea, in fact, I was going to post it here yesterday but got sidetracked. The problem of Cutesy vs. Descriptive is real though, as the title of this very thread indicates.

I think the penalty for intentionally cutesy tags should be deletion. But I'm harsh like that.

What? Tags in MeTa?

Tags in MeTa would be a higher priority, methinks. metafilterhistory only on the blue is like reading a Civil War book that doesn't mention any battles.

Building on the comments so far, if tags are too intrusive, what about a small autogenerated link to 'similar posts' using tags -- in the vein of the 'on this day 1, 2, 3, 4 years ago' links on the sidebar? To be useful, this might include encouraging users to add their name to tags...

I don't get what you're asking for. If what you want is to see posts that share the same tags, just click on the tag for a list. If you want to see posts by the same user, click on their username.

I'm suggesting a couple new icons (i.e. in addition to the [+] and [!] ...perhaps [№] - for other posts by the OP, or [★] for posts with matching tag(s). IANAD

Putting tags on the front page would just encourage the cutesy, artsy link-non-describers to put worse, less-literal, more-cutesy tags on their posts, wouldn't it?

also, watch out for the over-hyphenators.

Please don't put the tags on the front page, it'll start looking cluttered.

Personally, I would much prefer them to be in the title text of the comments/thread link, so that anyone curious enough to see the tags before clicking on the thread could just hover their mouse over it.

Doing anything anywhere encourages everyone to do anything, lobstermitten. With that kind of attitude, we'd all just be sitting around banging rocks together and laughing at each other's tiny penises.
