Is there a statute of limitation on double posts? November 30, 2001 10:04 AM Subscribe
Seeing this thread regarding the hoary old chestnut (you know, back in 2000) of Steve Albini vs. The Music Biz and Courtney Love ripping him off begs the question:
Is there a statute of limitations on double-posts?
Since TiggleTaggleTiger is a new user (May 2001), should he get cut slack? What if a newbie - new to the Web, new to MeFi - posts this link to a great site he found called fray.com? What's the correct procedure here?

So that there won't be any loose ends...
Of course there's a statute of limitations, but I don't think it applies here -- but that's just me. If other people (who possibly weren't here before) find it discussion-worthy, make some interesting comments, etc., I guess it's okay.
But it is old news.

I'll answer. The correct procedure is to let it pass. Yeesh.

(cia hat on) Kindall, that isn't productive. Not even witty. (cia hat off)
As for statute of limitiations, blah blah blah.. if someone was to post a link to the fray saying 'look at this cool new site!', then I think it'd be same as someone posting a link to yahoo! and saying 'cool new search engine!'
If there was something NEW at the fray, like he ever redesigned it or something, then, well, there's a new context.
But you, know, new people to the web and all. While, of course, you should do a search on metafilter if you're going to post something that may be on the beaten path. If it hasn't been brought up in a year, then most likely, the clientel here has changed, as well, and may benefit from it.
Aside from that, a nice little email to help the newbie out never hurts.

Yeah.

That post would get deleted I suppose.
Is there a statute of limitations on double-posts?
Difficult one. Some people say that a year's gap between posts is enough. Then again, somebody could just mine old posts and re-post them which would get a bit dull (no, I have no idea why someone would want to do that) particularly for people who already read the "one year ago today stuff" like I do.

<Pet Peeve Tangent>
Here's an article about the true meaning behind 'begging the question', which is often used more literally these days than in Socrates' time.

Since May 2001 is a newbie? That's six months, or two geological epochs in Metafilter years.

New to the Web?? Why, they would barely qualify as HUMAN! Surely we wouldn't tolerate such bitwastes around here, reading and posting and acting all like they had something to contribute and stuff....

Solistrato's post isn't an example of it, but I still don't understand why some people seem to experience physical pain when they see a double link. If I saw a link to Fray, I would probably click to see if it was some sort of joke, and then, seeing it wasn't, press the 'back' button and move on down the front page.
So, to answer the remaining qs, I say yes there is a statute of limitations, definitely cut him slack, and ignore the post.
Doing an archive search is really all one can do anyway, right?

Kindall: My apologies. That crack was uncalled for. Sorry about that.
