Why was my post deleted? September 27, 2002 4:56 PM   Subscribe

I'm confused. I posted what I thought was a typical interesting link, but I guess it didn't pass muster, since it was dumped. What gives?

(I linked to it from my K5 diary. Now I have cleanup there to do.)

You might want to email Matt and ask him. Check the posting guidelines, I'm sure it broke one of those rules. Other than that, we don't delete the threads, only Matt does.

Many of you are feeling sorry for this deleted thread. That is because you crazy. It's just a thread. It has no feelings. And Metafilter is now much nicer.

It was a great post, but for the first two hours it was up, no one could see it (the server for the linked site was giving "Too many users" errors). Since no one could see the links, the thing was pointless, and I deleted it. I'll bring it back now, seeing how the site is back online.

Sorry, that wasn't really relevant. I have bad impulse control. (Back on topic: I thought, checking lofi, that it was because it broke the front-page formatting; the comments.deleted page showed that the links were unavailable -- i.e., what Matt said. Sorry again.)

Your criticism doesn't apply in this case, mcwetboy, but you have redeemed yourself by giving us a wonderful standard response for other, less justified "Where is my post?" Metatalk threads.

So no sweat, little camper.

Sorry, I couldn't resist!

...And, to pose a question, is this the first time a deleted MetaFilter thread has been resurrected from the dead?

What I wanna know is if this resurrected thread is gonna eat our brains. Maybe it'll just hang around for thirty days before going to stay with its dad...

Okay, seriously: Matt, have you considered adding "Do NOT post to MeTa(or e-mail Matt, for that matter) asking why your post to MeFi was deleted unless you can provide some serious justification" to the MeTa new thread page? At the least, maybe a suggestion to check the graveyard(www.metafilter.com/comments_deleted.mefi/[###]) before hitting Post.

Nothing against tbc, and this was sort of a special case, anyway*. This is just one of tiny unnecessary things that seems to be happening more and more, and there are really only ever two answers: (1) the post was sub-optimal/total crap or (2) the discussion degraded beyond recovery.

*It's been my experience that, often, if there's a reason for a deletion beyond basic guideline violations, you'll e-mail the person, so I'm assuming it was overlooked here.

Well, thanks all. Glad to see it was the link's problem, not mine. And thanks for the graveyard pointer, Su.
