Those truly addicted to the blue will go work for an ISP where you'll never be blocked and you get paid to look at websites all day...
...not that I would know anything about that.

One of the perks of working for a big-time corporate news player is having unrestricted access to the web. ;-P

mischief, that's also one of the perks of working for a public health research unit whose big bosses realize that the way to get good work out of their people is to treat them like adults and allow them to access whatever information they want. it's nice to be judged according to one's output, rather than being treated like a kindergarten student.

Smartfilter lists Metafilter as a 'chat' site. Heh.

Well the obvious solution here is to quit your job and let your family starve.

I heard of a hack at defcon where you could use Google's translation service to translate English into English. Bingo, instant proxy. Like this. Notice the language pair - &langpair=en%7Cen. So unless your filter is blocking Google, you should be good to go.

tharlan,
Nylon for windows
Nylon for openBSD, linux, solaris, and mac os x
It's a 100% free socks 5 proxy server. You set it up, figure out your companies network (check what your IP at work is, if it changes you'll have to list a set of IPs) and add that to the allow list, and everything else to your deny list. Don't add the entire world or you'll be spam abused! ;-)
If you need any help with that, I could probably give you some examples.

And one of the great, great downsides, too.
*looks at pile of work sitting on desk, which has remained untouched all day while I downloaded Radiohead live shows*

Oddly, MetaTalk has always been blocked by our workfilter ("Games"????) but the Blue remains clear.

Proxy that shit...
Hey, uhhh, angrymodem, care to point me to a resource that tells me how to do that?
He could, but that wouldn't sound as techno-über-hip(per-than-thou) as "proxy that shit..."
A while back at work we had some heavy month-end reports running, the system was running slowly, IT took a look at the culprits, and I was at the top of the list. An IT fellow came over to me and said, "What the hell are you surfing? Are you downloading music?" Luckily I knew him fairly well, so I showed him MetaFilter and told him I'd switch to LoFi. The point: MeFi can get you noticed by IT.

Only those of us who read MeFi at home, of our own free will and at our own expense are entirely serious users. All others should be promptly banned.

Good heavens, Miggy, that would give MeFi a whole new dynamic. Echoing ghost town with a few serious, lonely users and a lot of unemployed crazies lurking here and there. The Blue would become the Twilight Blue Zone.

I agree. And flogged for good measure!
But I only say that because I'm unemployed at the moment.

The only ones who are really serious about MeFi are those who are putting their jobs at risk, along with the associated eviction, repossession, starving family thing. The rest of you are just not committed enough.

I lost MetaFilter privileges at work six months before I lost the whole job; the corporate drones were disappointed that my productivity hadn't improved. My "COBRA" post-termination medical coverage at first went toward Wellbutrin for depression and Combivent inhalers for shortness of breath until somebody gave me an EKG and noticed my heart was working at 22% of normal. I already mentioned my experience with cardiac catheterization. Been trying to teach myself mad web skillz when I haven't been strong enough to go out on job safari, but sometimes MetaFilter is the most brain exercise I have the strength for, like the last 10 days... without the "blogstop" anagrams and Tom Swifties, I'm sure I'd be totally suicidal. One reason I dread returning to the hospital is no MetaFilter privileges there (computer interference with heart monitors), and sometimes I just wish my cardiologist wasted some of his time here - he might be more human (then I think of some of my fellow MeFites and slap myself).
Maybe I should ask for recommendations of doctors in the L.A. area... BTW, anybody see my car keys?

What happened to Surat Thani, Stav?
Still an option for October, considering better offers (Surat's a bit of a hole, even if it is close to Samui, apparently). Thanks fer askin', though.

Well, I *am* techno-über-hip, and "proxy that shit" does not sound like what I would say.
I would say you should use an SSH tunnel through your home b0xen to avoid prying firewall eyes.

Proxying will only keep you out of IT's reach if your IT department is incompetent. Fortunately, most IT departments are incompetent, overworked or both, but be warned.
