Vancouver meetup photos April 24, 2004 4:03 AM   Subscribe

Photos from last night's MeFiVan April 2004 Edition. A splendid time was had by all. Food, drinks, five fresh fish and Ooom-pah-pah music (in a mock Irish pub, no less).

BTW, what happened at the Cleveland Meetup? Where are the photos? Don't make us file a Freedom of Information request to get them from the police.

I swear that I didn't know what the shout out sign said when the photo was taken...honest...sort of...
No, you got it all wrong. You're supposed to say the sign said "I for one welcome our mathowie overlords" and claim it was photoshopped.

/me sheds tear from his eye

You love me, you really really love me! ;)

now kids, this just shows you that if you whine, bitch and moan enough in #mefi, you too, might get a shoutout.

{You asked!}

The Cleveland Meetup was a rousing success. The crowd of three Mefites descended on an unsuspecting University Circle like a horde of drunken berserkers. sciurus (whose profile makes noise!) and Shane started off by terrorizing the Arabica Coffeeshop with rapid-fire caffeine-fueled intellectual conversation at a corner table. Then stuart_s joined in the mayhem and the party really got started!

Before long the revelry spilled over to the Barking Spider Tavern, housed in a beautiful old coach-house next-door, where the snappy patter continued betwixt bouts of fervent, animated people-watching (and enthusiastic music-listening)!

Stu, a quiet, intense gent but expert, rowdy foody, directed the by-then-famished Turbulent Trio to the Falafel Cafe, where they heckled the owner (a charming old Greek fellow) with polite conversation, all the while admiring the ornate hookah adorning a shelf in his fine dining establishment. The excellent repast refuled the Wild Bunch, who predictably set out in search of more trouble!

Stu astutely pointed out that dessert was necessary (nay, not necessary, but inevitably, indubitably vital!), and the newfound Mefi Mafiosa linked arms and 0wnz3r3d the sidewalk all the way to Little Italy, knocking helpless, bemused pedestrians flailing into the street, with nary a care to upended baby trams or cursing gangs of skin-head thugs, and singing bawdy, pornographic MetaFilter drinking songs, the lyrics of which must never be published here or anywhere else (NSFtL! Not Safe For the Living!) Donuts were greedily consumed at the famous former Presti's (now Gilli's [sp?]) Bakery...

You know: It was pretty fun.

Pictures? Argh... Shane had only brought his Pencam without a flash, so no incriminating photos (which would necessarilly have been destroyed anyway) exist from the dark Cleveland back alleys that were trod that night. However, as Shane had promised t r a c y a shoutout, he cobbled one together at home to fool the poor clueless lass. And taz was similarly fooled. (Shh! Don't tell her!)

riffola and taz were there in ethereal form, and are judiciously to be blamed for any accusations of goosings or groping that may or may not have taken place.

The lovely and talented boomchicka was unable to attend, having been tied to a chair by a wedding caterer. But she has promised to do lunch with one or more Mefites in the near future, and will be held to that promise on pain of her, um... something or other!

{Um, guys? Isn't that about how the evening went?}

Five Fresh Fish looks like Michael Medved!

Shane: No (real) photos? No (real) shout outs? She that is boomchickedness personified a no-show? Hell, no Ooom-pah-pah band? You Cleveland folk have some catching up to do. Consider that one a trial run.

Kwantsar: Michael Medved is a sanctimonious, opinionated, fundamentalist windbag...Five Fresh Fish is, to the best of my knowledge, *not* a fundamentalist.

Space Coyote: Hahaha..."human beings"...that's a good one. There is a reason all the meetups are at night.

anastasiav: Hmm..."Juan's a nice guy and cute too". Excellent use of "scare italics" there ;)

The last thing I wanted to do was attach faces to the #mefi gang. Now you're no longer my imaginary computer friends.

YOU'RE DORKS!

I kid because I love

Shane got it spot on for the most part- we did rescue some orphans from a burning sweatshop- but compared to our other revelries that event was rather banal.

There's nothing quite like a harddrive crap-out to ruin one's weekend. Or at least ruin one's ability to post to Meta.

The Vancouver MeFi meetup was All Good. Well, all good until Michael showed up with his two-dozen tailored-shirt toadies and hangers-on, and his oom-pah-pah band. Fortunately, they had to catch a bus, and fled in short order.

We didn't solve any of the world's problems, but we ate good food and helped put a dent into the beer supply.

It was very good to meet y'all.
