AskMe in the header, and matching prefs May 13, 2004 11:08 AM   Subscribe

Two extremely minor things with Ask MetaFilter.
1. Can you add a link to AskMe in the MetaFilter.com header?
2. I have my preferences set to open links in a new window, but they don't do that in AskMe threads.

I also just wanted to say that Ask Metafilter has become my favorite thing about MeFi. Thanks everybody!

1. This has been asked about many times; AskMe is still considered to be in "beta" stage, and considered to be not ready for whole-community consumption yet. I've no idea what the timeline on this is like.

2. this has also been discussed.
patience, young grasshopper.

1. no, not now.
2. eventually, but really very few people use this feature. I'm inclined to take it out of MeFi and ask users to rely on their own browser controls (shift-click usually opens a link in a new window).

Aw, geez. Don't take away my pony.

*bang*

They shoot horses, don't they?

This is just like the end of "Old Yeller"

That is, if Old Yeller were a pony instead of a dog...and pizzasub had shot Old Yeller himself instead of mathowie doing it for him. Still, the analogy is bang-on.

Dear God no. Please, no. Most people are dumb for not turning it on. It's a great feature.

shit. ditto hildago. i've been waiting years for you to add this simple functionality to metatalk. cripes, it's a basic feature of most blogs.

Are you telling me metafilter is the only site where you'd like to be able to do auto-open-in-new-window? If so, you should get out more (in the sit behind the computer and visit other sites sense). Configure it properly in your browser once, and enjoy it everwhere. And as an added bonus, save Matt's pony-making time for important stuff.

Open in new window is overrated anyhow; tabs are where it's at.
posted by thebabelfish at 6:54 PM on May 13, 2004

Call it tabs if you must. In an MDI interface like the wonderful opera one, they're just windows: It's just that they're not top-level windows. (though I must admit opera doesn't call them "windows" either, but confusingly "pages").

Except, this would be using Matt's scarce time to shoot the pony... which has many secret fans, clearly.

Link or no, when does it stop being "beta" and lapse into "stuff I meant to nail down proper for prime time but haven't had the time to work on this year" ? Seriously. Beta is o-ver. The servicehas been running in full production mode for months. With new user accounts closed for larger reasons, what's the danger in making AskMe more visible to the world?

fvw, does opera distinguish between internal and external links? if so, i may switch.

and ditto scarabic. matt has added many features to mefi while ignoring meta, and then he simply cloned meta to make askme, and my prediction is, what you see today is all you'll ever get, regardless of what he occasionally says.

Have you ever seen that movie? It's awful.

Quonsar: Even better than that, you just use leftmouse for <open in this window/page/tab> and middlemouse for <open in new window/page/tab>
posted by fvw at 10:16 AM on May 14, 2004

well, hell, firefox does that much. but i want my technology to think for me. matt has the blue set up all nice so that if you have chosen "open links in new whatever" the html comes with a nice <base target="_blank">. the internal links are already specified as target="_self" . i simply do not understand why this has taken years to get consistent between the sites.

besides, i just like to bitch.
