Yeah, I know that feature is messed up, but I've been busy entertaining visiting family for the past week and will fix it today.

And quonsar, you could have just emailed me or at least made an attempt to post a coherent request here. I had to look at each link to decipher what you were trying to say amid all the garbage and jokes about how I do things here.

Mea Culpa:

When I wrote the contacts code I should have closed the vulnerabilities that some members have so gleefully exploited. Not doing so put Matt in the nasty position of having to patch my code on the fly.

All I can do is chalk it up to experience and remind myself to be less naively trusting next time. But it's not fair to blame Matt for problems I created.

When I wrote the contacts code I should have closed the vulnerabilities that some members have so gleefully exploited. Not doing so put Matt in the nasty position of having to patch my code on the fly.

I object to the term "gleefully exploited". I discovered a number of issues with both the code and the underlying structure of the database for the Contacts features. There were some serious issues with the code for the Contacts features; for example, in addition to being able to modify the "friend", "acquaintance", etc. fields, I was able to embed javascript code into those fields (that's definitely not a good thing). At every stage, I informed mathowie of what I'd found. I experimented around with it a bit (once or twice only...and the second time was just to verify things) and then IMed mathowie to let him know about the issues. It was all very above-board and done with the best intentions of MetaFilter at heart (the fact that I had glee while doing any of this isn't germane to the issue at hand).

All I can do is chalk it up to experience and remind myself to be less naively trusting next time.

Chalking things up to experience is good; however, you weren't "naively trusting", you wrote some code that had holes in it that someone could (maliciously or gleefully or otherwise) exploit. This is perfectly normal. Every coder does it — it's all part of the learning process. Next time you write code you'll be more aware of these kinds of issues and you'll write tighter code.

I think Matt's got the right attitude towards this whole issue. Sure it's annoying and more work for him when the new features are used in ways that weren't intended (or even anticipated); however, he fixes the code, makes the sytem better and everyone benefits. I can understand that from your perspective it may seem like everyone's dumping on your child here, but really, isn't it better that the genial folks at MetaFilter find/point out/suggest fixes to these possible exploits than to let the issues remain undiscovered and available for less altruistically minded visitors to the site?

well it's not that it's the wrong colour, it actually is broken, and matt did go on to tend other ponies before this one was fixed up.
