Why does this redirect to Mefi? September 26, 2004 1:35 AM   Subscribe

Matt, have you ever heard of this out fit - www.sendbackliberty.us

The url takes you to this page...!!

Looks well fishy to me.

Ah, well I put an iframe in there which looked fine in preview, but didn't make it to the final post. Any way, folks can click on the link to see what it looks like.

What's up with that?

No, it takes you to the blue.

Nice work! I'll give it a 9, but I've been paid off by the Romanians.

Fuckin' Romanians.

nth: that was my whole point!
P_G: did you find that in the Readers Digest? (",)

I know, I seemed to mung up the link that was there, and it's just as well really, plus iframes v. poor form and all that, an' I'm v. tired again after an all-nighter....shuffles off, sniffling and trembling...

dash_slot, I think the point nthdegx was making was that your post is on the gray, thus clicking on the link doesn't technically take you to "this" (gray) page, but rather to the blue.

I know, I know...if you knew me in real life, you'd see a lot more of this sort of confusion. I'm sorry.

Does anyone have any light to shed on this outfit?

I'm sure it's the same story it always is; that Matt used to host their site and it's disappeared and now redirects to us.

Crikey - don't make too much fuss about it. Looks like another backdoor I can use to read mefi at work, for a few weeks at least!

dash-slot, did Konolia's comment get you investigating?

My 1st thought is that maybe someone is skimming google-ad pageviews. On preview, prentiz is probably correct. Cancel the B MattSignal.

of course someone could do something like this to try and get logins, but there is not much point since we could just email matt and cry "help meeeee!"

There's no apostrophe in RFCs. Newbie.

I've explained this about a dozen times already, but here it is again: I hosted a lot of little sites for friends, and when I switched from IIS to Apache, I couldn't host a lot of them (since they were using ASP). Folks have left the domains pointing to this server, and since I'm not redirecting the domain requests to their sites, the default site comes up (which in this case is MetaFilter).

Go through the wayback machine if you want to see what any of these sites were. The sendbackliberty.us was a joke anti-france site where people supposedly signed a petition to give the statue back to france, and replace it with a giant statue of ronald reagan (which was funny last year, before he died).

I just hosted it, I didn't write any of it.

Now it's just common sense.

Could it be time for a Mefi FAQ to be hosted on-site, rather than solely at the wiki?

I love talespin.net personally. My work filter blocks MeFi proper.

Well, see? You obviously haven't read the RFC. I bet you think that IRC is arcane, too.
