I should have said "appears to have been hacked" since, at least on my system, the normal MeFi user page comes up and then is replaced with the wilwheaton.org page. I'm making no assumptions with regards to why. It just seemed out of character to what I could recall of his past posting so my first thoughts weren't that it was his doing.

I work as an editorial writer. In my job, reading on news and trends is imperative, and I read many blogs over the course of my day for ideas and inspiration. I'm not "screwing around at work," angry modem is screwing around with a normally work-safe site I can feel safe browsing.

If every time a newbie posts a comment, you're going to whine about it, then there won't be any and it will continue to be an intellectually incestuous, closed-door place. Congrats, if that's what you want. Lord knows we wouldn't want fresh blood around these parts.

ok, fair enough, sincere apologies for offending anyone - especially un owen.

but i get a little angry when people start saying "wah, this isn't safe for work", and that anger was just doubled when i figured out this wasn't even ABOUT metafilter, it was about MONKEYFILTER. asking for users to be banned for their actions on other sites has been done before (users attacking others in comments in blogs, etc) and i really don't like the precedent this would set, not to mention that it would send the message to the many new users we have that actions on other sites are fair grounds for exile.

users are not banned for general character issues; AFAIK, you have to actually do something wrong HERE to get banned. i only assumed newbieness because that precedent, i thought, was fairly clear.

imho, this is just a symptom of the *many* mentions of monkeyfilter within metafilter since new memberships were opened up. it happened before with 9622 - inside jokes and stuff like that get people really on edge here - call it community nationalism - and i REALLY hate the idea that metatalk can be used to call people out for misconduct on other sites.

again apologies to all, but i still don't see a) why this should be on metafilter at all, and b) why un owen called for angry modem to be kicked off mefi as well. if he misbehaved on monkeyfilter, ban him there. metafilter does not need to be involved.

Have you seen what angry modem's profile does?

It redirects you to wilwheaton.org. Another shock site.

Combined with his behavior on mofi, I'd think he's an unacceptable risk here - he only refrains from posting NSFW, improperly labeled crap here because, in his words, mefi "happens to be good (for the most part)." So I guess as long as you keep him happy, it'll be fine. But as soon as his arbitrary standards of "good" go away, he'll not only redirect you to shock sites in his profile but post them on the main page. I'm not saying mathowie should necessarily boot him here (I would, but I'm not him), but he seems like a pretty big liability. A lot of mefites have good jobs they don't need ruined by antics like this, or by looking at someone's profile, for chrissakes.
posted by u.n. owen at 2:22 PM on November 19, 2004

for crying out loud... go bother tracicle about his antics at mofi, don't call for him to be ousted on a completely separate site. and pretty much anyone here could snap at any given moment, so banning someone for their potential bad behaviour would require matt just pack up and close the place. frankly if your work requires you surf the net then your employer should be prepared for you to accidentally come across stupid shit sometimes.

Well, as long as he gets banned from MoFi... that's enough.

And he was.

I think the big thing was that people finally learned that the user page ALLOWS HTML AND OTHER SUCH THINGS. the user pages aren't secure and anyone and their monkey can do what angry modem has done. why this would freak someone out, I'm not sure.

u.n. owen: if you have a personal problem against angry modem, create your own community blog and ban him there. Or you could email matt and asked. But angry modem was doing nothing to belittle metafilter and he posts less "risk material" than most people. Angry didn't force you to click the link. You clicked and you have to pay the consquences. And the fact that you're bitching about this on metafilter shows that you want your cake and eat it too.

no it really isn't. where did you read that MeFi is supposed to be safe for any kind of boob-phobic workplace? self-policing led the (mostly American, hence with boob-phobic emoployers) community to add nsfw tags. just that.
you read this site to pilfer news stories from it? cool. but don't get mad if every once in a while something nsfw actually gets into your precious monitor.

if your employer's so cranky, you can also read MeFi from home, by the way.

Okie, then.

No problem. I rescind my complaints. My complaint was based on a combination of behaviors - in the vein of "if you make one mistake, it's forgivable, but if it's a pattern of behavior, it's probably not." Fool me twice...can't get fooled again.

I just think it'd be nice if there was an official rule against redirects (particularly to shock sites and general awfulness) in the user pages. If it's acceptable to do whatever you want with a user page, tubgirl has always been a favorite image of mine.

yeah, i went to wilwheaton.org and saw nothing NSFW there at all. perhaps that is because it has been "hacked by chinese", but as far as i am able to tell, angry modem has not done anything wrong here on metafilter.

here's where i'm coming from:
a) the idea of preemptive attacks on "unacceptable risks" is a principle that, due to certain current events, i am not very keen on.
b) freedom of speech is far, far more important to me than making sure people don't see anything inappropriate.

unless i'm missing something huge about wilwheaton.org, i think you are out of line in demanding that he be dismissed.

Hmm, let's try to get this on different lines. I think u.n. owen may be correct - a person who puts a trap link to a hijack site, specifically designed to get individuals in trouble by abusing javascript (I've hit Last Measure before, moderating the bottomfeeders on Slashdot where that sort of thing is just an occupational hazard) - is a hands down cock, a real shithead, the kind of bad citizen that makes the online environment a less fun place to be. They're likely to screw things up for themselves here eventually. But that's life.

Because honestly, the internet, or whatever the hell you call this thing, is NOT safe for work. Most of us, I would bet very safe money, would get fired if it was laid down before our bosses what we were doing and how much and why. Because there are a whole lotta people taking 3 hour coffee breaks on places like Metafilter. Hijacks are part of life here. So if random browsing is a legitimate part of your job, your employer needs to know that from time to time, through no fault of your own, you may briefly land on some nasty smack. So the "I could get fired" line is maybe a bit hyperbole. Plus people do things like say "cock" over and over and over again to make a point... No, it's not like a looped wav shouting "I'm Looking at Gay Porn," but it's still not really "safe for work"

But there are expectations and policies and courteaous behavior. Related to things actually here - IS it policy that you can redirect your profile here at metafilter to whatever external site? I expect, I thought reasonably, that when I click a profile link, I'm heading to a profile - that is to say, a metafilter.com link. If that is not supposed to be the case I'd like to know, so I won't ever click on a cock like Angry Modem's profile again, because, jeeze, who knows? Can anyone answer whether this ability is a feature, a loophole, or a hack?
posted by nanojath at 2:54 PM on November 19, 2004

Well, I am not able to take him off my contact list because of that redirect. I don't want to go see if he is redirecting to inappropriate crap, because last time I got directed to a wilwheaton site of his I got to look at someone's big gaping anus, a sight I never want to repeat.
posted by konolia at 2:57 PM on November 19, 2004

But why defend angry_modem? It's a shitty thing for him to do.

not to elevate this case to a status it most definitely does not deserve, but honestly, for the same reason the ACLU defends racist hate speech: to defend the principle at heart. even if you want to look at it from a self-interest perspective, if hate speech is outlawed, then whoever defines hate speech controls hate speech can tell you exactly what you are and are not allowed to say. that general principle applies here as well; if every single person who was an asshole on another website got a meta post, i don't think anyone would ever read meta again because the signal to noise ratio would be unbearable.

also, if someone is a jerk to me personally, i don't go into his workplace, or his favorite bar, or her knitting circle, and tell everyone there what a dick i think he is. this is another important principle - i like that my reputation in different circles is different. ESPECIALLY on the internet.

"Big gaping anus, a sight I never want to repeat"

Why? Is the sight of a feature of the human body (that, after all, you share, if in a presumably attenuated form) more offensive to you than, say, a picture of a deballed, bloodsoaked Marine, or the desecrated corpse of a nine-year-old child?

And, yeah, scat's pretty sad, and maybe a little disturbing. But, c'mon, grow up, OK? I hate to be the one to say it, but shit happens.

Put another way: your priorities regarding "the offensive" and its nature mystify me.

a) why this should be on metafilter at all

There was a point where some of us really thought angry modem wasn't that bad. So we just wanted to let MeFi know in case the account was hacked. There's a better way to do that I'm sure, but we were young, impressionable kids - high on Oreos and Mountain Dew. wea culpa

Anyway - according to Internet time it's all over, so thanks everyone for playing.

i remember that, i think it was beth. a perfect example of why forcing others to be responsible for the safety of your workplace surfing habits is unfair and futile - there was absolutely nothing wrong with the thread she was viewing, her employer just happened to be an illiterate knee-jerk lunatic.

un owen, it's pretty easy to avoid landing on pages that'll get you into trouble. When I start a new contract I find out about the net policy at the office, then when I do visit the site on lunch hours, etc, I just go to places where comments have already been placed. If something is shock or porn related, the comments will reflect it. I hover over links to see what URL they go to. It's really not that difficult.

And add my voice to the "wtf?" response to the concept of banning someone here over behaviour on another site.

Also, I support angry's protest over Fareway grocery stores not stocking cold 2-liter bottles of soda. I hope they learned something in all of this.

Well, the only one of the above I have viewed is the anus. Yes, I have one, and so does everyone else, but hello, I was not EXPECTING to see it, was not LOOKING for it, and ps my computer is in the dining room. Where my teenage girls walk by on the way to the kitchen or to the living room where the tv is. So, let me see if I have this right. For your work you are required to visit unmoderated Internet discussion forums. Including ones like MetaFilter which frequently post links generally considered not safe for work. Sites where you know posters will sometimes link to photos of wide gaping anuses. And even though your job duties require you to use such unrestricted sites, you might get fired if the site links to "bad things".

Look, try to understand this: I remain unthreatened by images, except as they imply a reality.

Reality is much sadder and scarier to me than images - which, I agree, does not necessarily imply that I want to spend my day looking at motorcycle-crash victims and lime pit exhumations.

Let's reframe this. You should, of course, have the ability to avoid that which repels you, whether or not that repulsion makes any sense. What people are trying to tell you is that you absolutely do *not* have the right to make things "safe" for others, nor do we authorize you to appeal to authority - putatively on our communal behalf - to request such measures as will make you feel safer.

You are already adequately provided with choice - choice that extends to not surfing the Web, not surfing the Web when your impressionable teenagers (!) are around, not surfing MetaFilter, not following links from MetaFilter. You are already empowered. What you choose to do with that power is up to you. But leave me out of it, huh?

On the other general principle involved. For myself, human suffering breaks my heart, and I don't like to see graphic evidence of it. But if I turn away from its representation, I'm only a small step away from denying its existence. And that, in turn, is morally reprehensible.

On a related note: Matt, I emphasize once again that I would pay very good money for killfiles.

In the event that I become a recognizable MeFi celebrity (unlikely; I lack the natural charm of the likeable ones, and I lack the bullheaded tenacity of the rest), I'll still probably manage to side-step any shitbomb links because it's second nature to me by now.

And I think it your status is material: you're upset by something that (1) many people seem not to be upset by the notion of and (2) most people aren't in a position to worry about, and yet you're presenting this as a dramatic example of what everybody else should be worrying about.

It just seems pretty damned self-absorbed to me: if you could actually remove yourself from the context of your complaint, the reaction you're getting might strike you as common sense.

Mine is not the only case of a link being not what it seemed; and goatse is actually wellknown for turning up in unwanted places, not just on mefi. I've said before that I personally don't have any problem with goatse and I think it's funny that other people do. But, hey, other people do. Other people are deeply offended by it. So, when the whole point is tricking people into seeing something that deeply offends them...that's being a jerk. It's not complicated. The mean-spiritidness of angry_modem doing that to MoFi is appalling, and it's not completely independent of MeFi because he's as much as said that he did it because he wanted to offend MoFi, which he doesn't think much of. MoFi has been much discussed in the past two days, angry_modem signed up at MoFi as angry_modem, at a site similar to MeFi, and posted something there that is explicitly ban-worthy here. Just to piss them off.

On the konolia matter, here we have angry_modem owning the wilwheaton.org domain, and konolia being a very unusual name (google it). And konolia's said she googles for konolia from time to time and likes wilwheaton...lo and behold, someone posts a fake link to goatse on wilwheaton.org. What are the odds?

The issue is being someone who likes to wind people up, has an affinity for scatological and trangressive humor, and is malicious. So he didn't do it here and it's not appropriate or sensible to sanction him here. Makes sense. That doesn't mean people don't have a right to be pissed off at him. He deserves it.

Only if you assume that MetaFilter is suppose to be a family safe website. It isn't.

I like my MetaFilter on the "wild west" side of this issue. And it is. Because "we" made it that way. "We" includes you. "We" includes Matt.

There are plenty of places on the net where users will get banned very quickly for doing anything that might let konolia be exposed to a bad picture. This site is not one of those. Matt has accepted ads from sites that are not family friendly. Several people have linked to photos of anuses without being banned. Profanity is common. We talk about sex all the time.

MetaFilter is not a place where you can reasonably expect to avoid anuses. Such an expectation is naive.

Matt has accepted ads from sites that are not family friendly.

And he has denied ads for sites that weren't obviously labled as adult sites. That's the issue here: not that such things are always inappropriate, but that fair warning ought to be given.

Deliberately tricking people into seeing things they don't want to see just because you know it will piss them off is offensive and immature. That's all I'm condemning here.

First of all, I am horrified that two important taboos have been broken--we are Never, Ever supposed to mention the Site That Dares Not Speak Its Name ("tiny chartreuse rugbys"), and I thought we were equally Forbidden from making the konolia-b*nnyf*re link? I am worried, my brothers and sisters. Worried that the Volcano Gods will be angry because we have broken these powerful taboos. Now we must sacrifice a virgin.

And, seriously, I hate to be surprised by goatse as much as the next person, but WTF is all of this drama about something that didn't even happen here, but over at MonkeyFilter, which is perfectly able to do its own disciplining?!?!?!?!?!?!

This thread was started by someone worried about another user's page at metafilter. It was not started about the monkeyfilter post (though that was brought up to explain why the user page was being looked at in the first place). We have now established that the account was not hacked, and that the user is simply deeply immature and disrespectful to the webspace of others.

The rest of the thread after that was established (including this comment) is useless bickering, which is not doing much to support the defense of metafilter I was trying to make elsewhere today.

MetaFilter isn't for everyone. That's a good thing. People shouldn't be here because they need a friend or a place to chat. They should be here because they like MetaFilter.

Having never heard of goatse until I started lurking at MeFi several months ago, I got curious and sought it out here at home, where there'd be no consequences.

Getting it unawares at work, with booming audio and with a web reproduction-upon-reproduction that I couldn't control, made me scared for my job. Sure I spend work time goofing around on the internet. But what angry modem pulled at MoFi was hostile - I can't imagine what more general (i.e. not directed at one user) move could be more hostile.

I paid my money and joined MeFi anyway, where angry modem may be a member in good standing. Joining was only five dollars; the site's earned that from my lurking; and there's no point in punishing MeFi just because one of the members has shown himself to be a definition of The Consummate and Unrepentant Internet Shithead.

The Disjoined (and Often Post Mortem) MetaFilter Dot

The Disjoined Dot is a point-source shot of reverse ekphrasis with an intuitive referential chaser; it is very nearly (sort of) a natural sign, and maybe it (kind of) would be a (sort of) natural sign if soggy wet ashes would stop asking what the fuck it means; if you (kind of) can't connect the transcendent (sort of) Dots - then maybe you (kind of) suck and you (sort of) shouldn't be here.

for once, what EB said
I've said before that I personally don't have any problem with goatse and I think it's funny that other people do.

He deserves it

CITY OF BLINDING LIGHTS

The more you see the less you know
The less you find out as you go
I knew much more then than I do now

Neon heart dayglo eyes
A city lit by fireflies
They’re advertising in the skies
For people like us

And I miss you when you’re not around
I’m getting ready to leave the ground….

Ooh ooh ooh
Ooh ooh ooh

Oh you look so beautiful tonight
In the city of blinding lights

Don’t look before you laugh
Look ugly in a photograph
Flash bulbs purple irises
The camera can’t see

I’ve seen you walk unafraid
I’ve seen you in the clothes you made
Can you see the beauty inside of me?
What happened to the beauty I had inside of me?

And I miss you when you’re not around
I’m getting ready to leave the ground

Ooh ooh ooh
Ooh ooh ooh

Oh you look so beautiful tonight
In the city of blinding lights

Time… time
Won’t leave me as I am
But time won’t take the boy out of this man

Oh you look so beautiful tonight
Oh you look so beautiful tonight
Oh you look so beautiful tonight
In the city of blinding lights

The more you know the less you feel
Some pray for others steal
Blessings are not just for the ones who kneel… luckily

Did I Ever tell you about the man who taught his asshole to talk?
by William S. Burroughs
Did I ever tell you about the man who taught his ass to talk? His whole abdomen would move up and down you dig farting out the words. It was unlike anything I had ever heard.

"This ass talk had sort of a gut frequency. It hit you right down there like you gotta go. You know when the old colon gives you the elbow and it feels sorta cold inside, and you know all you have to do is turn loose? Well this talking hit you right down there, a bubbly, thick stagnant sound, a sound you could smell.

"This man worked for a carnival you dig, and to start with it was like a novelty ventriliquist act. Real funny, too, at first. He had a number he called "The Better 'Ole' that was a scream, I tell you. I forget most of it but it was clever. Like, "Oh I say, are you still down there, old thing?'

"'Nah! I had to go relieve myself.'

"After a while the ass start talking on its own. He would go in without anything prepared and his ass would ad-lib and toss the gags back at him every time.

"Then it developed sort of teeth-like little raspy in- curving hooks and start eating. He thought this was cute at first and built and act around it, but the asshole would eat its way through his pants and start talking on the street, shouting out it wanted equal rights. It would get drunk, too, and have crying jags nobody loved it and it wanted to be kissed same as any other mouth. Finally it talked all the time day and night, you could hear him for blocks screaming at it to shut up, and beating it with his fist, and sticking candles up it, but nothing did any good and the asshole said to him: 'It's you who will shut up in the end. Not me. Because we don't need you around here any more. I can talk and eat AND shit.'

"After that he began waking up in the morning with a transparent jelly like a tadpole's tail all over his mouth. This jelly was what the scientists call un-D.T., Undifferentiated Tissue, which can grow into any kind of flesh on the human body. He would tear it off his mouth and the pieces would stick to his hands like burning gasoline jelly and grow there, grow anywhere on him a glob of it fell. So finally his mouth sealed over, and the whole head would have have amputated spontaneous- except for the EYES you dig. That's one thing the asshole COULDN'T do was see. It needed the eyes. But nerve connections were blocked and infiltrated and atrophied so the brain couldn't give orders any more. It was trapped in the skull, sealed off. For a while you could see the silent, helpless suffering of the brain behind the eyes, then finally the brain must have died, because the eyes WENT OUT, and there was no more feeling in them than a crab's eyes on the end of a stalk.

Could there be a more fitting end to this thread?

Would you want someone to do that to your mother?

Absolutely. She could use a little direct, visual confrontation with the real world.

Here's a summary for those of you coming late to the thread:

angry modem was Chinese and hacked himself. Then konolia, got entrapped by Wesley Willis and exposed his anus, which scared adamgreenfield's mother. MetaFilter was almost over. More recently other member's mothers have been appearing only for quonsar for relieve himself on them, likely due to chemical imbalances. Which brings us to the present, where angry modem is back trying to extend the life of this thread by making the sound of one anus gaping.

Helpful Hint:

If you make tiny paper hats with different names on them, the entire thread above can be acted out using only one Rockem' Sockem' Robots set.
