is this MeTa post open or closed? January 23, 2005 4:33 AM   Subscribe

Quick! - tell me - without clicking through - is this MeTa post open or closed? Well, which is it? Open or closed? You can't tell, can you? Sucks, doesn't it? You'd think a pop star tag junkie could spare an ASCII spangle to mark molested threads. But Nooooo. Crazy fascist likes to lure you in and jump out at you like a jack-in-the-box Mussolini. Sad. I spoke to his mother. She tells me he used to be such a good boy.

What difference does it make? I open MeTa threads to get info, not necessarily to comment.

CLEANUP IN AISLE TWO...
posted by Smart Dalek at 5:07 AM on January 23, 2005

Frozen threads, especially while they are newfangled, are a mild curiosity, and should be labeled; those of us shopping for them would appreciate the added convenience.

Besides, who doesn't love a shiny scrap of extra data? And adding a tag is a mere bagatelle, in terms of code and server load.

But alas, even this short excursion into the practical has exceeded the limits of my attention span.

don't care. If it's open, and I want to comment, I can. If it's closed and I want to comment, I cry. But I don't need an indicator on the metatalk front page. That would imply that a closed thread is no longer worth investigating.

Just wondering - Did you have any particular ASCII spangle in mind?
Something like this?

mathowie - the proper terminology in this case is, "I feel your pain."

Our relentless obnoxious pleadings have apparently forced Mathowie into becoming a politician. Fortunately, or not, he's chosen Bill Clinton as a model. Now which of us gets to be the slutty virtual intern?

Huh? So someone's frustration is "nothing"? I'm not following you there.

I'm only commenting here because I don't know if I'll be able to on any of the other threads I scrolled by without checking, and by the time I get back to this one, it may be closed as well.

In fact, for all I know, mathowie might close this one even while I'm right in the mi

Heh. A question that answers itself. It makes a difference if you're opening the thread to comment.

Totally unnecessary pony, though. Saving the users one click is about as low a priority as you can get. It might spare Matt some bandwidth to keep comment-bent people from clicking on cloased threads, since the resulting page load is more or less a vain expenditure, but the worth of bothering to implement such a teeny bandwidth-saver is his call to make.

Yes yes - cortex and milovoo have it. 'Closed' would be adequate'; I'd prefer 'Götterdämmerung'.
