Sydney meetup photos April 3, 2005 10:30 PM   Subscribe

Pictures from the Sydney meetup.
A great night of discussion. I've checked back and mea culpa, I suggested the Erko.

You had a camera? I can't look that bad - your cam. obviously needs fixing. I think Arha was going to post her pix sometime too.
It was a good night - despite my near loss of voice the next day. Bloody plagiarism.

Sooooooo busted tellurian. I knew someone had to be responsible for the Erko.

I'll post my photos as soon as I find the ^%(#$!&(*^$ computer cable (had a great night btw).

Holy shit! A shoutout! Wow, thanks.

I know there's some of you in Melbourne... we can do it.

DO IT.

I know...maybe we can resolve all differences and settle on common ground. I wonder what's exactly halfway between Sydney and Melbourne? :)

Balmain?

I spent five years as a Sydney Inner Westie. I don't exactly envy you guys, but the photo of you heading up to King St really hit me in the nostalgia nuts.

hey Wolof, I remember you recommending that I visit Newtown etc...I finally did.

Theres a meetup group in Melbourne and there has been an email sent out for a meeting, it's just that no one seems interested.
posted by sien at 4:31 AM on April 5, 2005

Strange sien - a fair few responses to the Sydney meetup were "Why not Melbourne/Brisbane?" I suspect Melbourne has roughly the same numbers as Sydney.
posted by tellurian at 4:27 PM on April 5, 2005

Probably better put as: That's strange. I didn't mean to call you strange sien.

Oh God! I give up.

I tried to organise one but it died. I'm not against trying again, there's even a travelling MeFite in Melb whom I may be meeting this week. Like I said: DO IT. Email in profile etc...

*travelling MeFite waves* hello!

All welcome.

A Sydney thread derailed (?detrammed) by a Melburnian!
There must be a penalty surely.
Ummm...where's my interstate etiquette handbook?

You hate us 'cause we're cooler than you, ay Peacay? ;)

aww cmon, don't knock it. anyway, 'twill be good, saint jerome's is a wicked place! has a very chilled-out bloc-party vibe. hope it won't just be bdave and me!

What are Sydneyites called? (Sydneyers? Sydneyians?)
posted by amberglow at 9:37 PM on April 5, 2005

Amberglow- Sydneysiders. They call us Mexicans.

*Runs away before it gets parochial*

posted by bdave at 9:43 PM on April 5, 2005

oh--weird. Where'd they get that from?

(I hear Melbourne is more fun at night, and better shopping too.)
posted by amberglow at 9:53 PM on April 5, 2005

amberglow- it's because we're south of the border. And I won't tell you how much better the nightlife/shopping/food/coffee is here, you'll just have to take my word for it. Don't get me wrong, Sydney's ok, I will go there for a holiday, it's just I prefer Melbourne.
posted by bdave at 10:01 PM on April 5, 2005

Is that this Thursday or next Thursday for a Melbourne MeFi Meetup (MelMefiMeet?).

I tried to get something going for next Thursday via Meetup.com - is anyone a member there posting here?
posted by sien at 10:48 PM on April 5, 2005

Sien- tomorrow (short notice, thread derail/hijack, I know). Come along, email in profile etc. I don't ususally read meetup.com, I just look here.

On preview, just looked, nothing there?
posted by bdave at 11:02 PM on April 5, 2005

Ususally? sheesh
posted by bdave at 11:08 PM on April 5, 2005

Well you learn something new everyday. I've lived in Sydney for just over thirty years and never heard Melburnians [Melbournians?] referred to as Mexicans but I see it's recorded in Hansard during an annual Daylight Saving debate.

I don't mind being called a Mexican. It's one of my favourite songs.
posted by bdave at 11:47 PM on April 5, 2005

I can't make it tommorrow night but I've put it up at meetup. I sent out an email with the announcement. Maybe next week or the week after for another meetup in Melbourne?
posted by sien at 2:09 AM on April 6, 2005

And a link to the events page for Melbourne.

Bdave, I'm way past the point of rivalry (and it did take a good few years).
Melbourne is a very very fine city. A bit more classy, a bit less crowded. Nice food. Nice indoor stuff - buildings cafes etc. Nice countryside around it. I'd be happy to live there.
Sydney is for outdoors and summer - I couldn't imagine anywhere else better Nov-Feb. It is the happening thang. And I won't embarrass you by starting on BEACHES.
posted by peacay at 2:45 AM on April 6, 2005

Yeah, well, both Melbourne and Sydney are not bad places to visit, but you wouldn't want to live there.

Beaches? Beaches? Melbourne has beaches? Yeah, right - if you like to break through the ice to go for a swim!

Somebody, pass me the billabong.
posted by taz at 4:23 AM on April 6, 2005

well, Kath and Kim is in Melbourne or Sydney? (or Perth? or none of those places? And is that a plus or a minus?) ; >
posted by amberglow at 6:43 AM on April 6, 2005

Umm....not sure where they are amberglow. (Syd or Melb for sure.....prolly Melb)
But they make me cringe - I like the girls in the show individually as comedians (outside of K+K), but that show is embarrassing, unbelievably atypical sterotyping and crass and really really really stupid. There's some things about which there ought to be a referendum before we let outsiders see them (or locals for that matter).
can you tell I'm not a fan
