Gun control post call-out April 27, 2005 8:01 PM Subscribe
This is a gun control debate waiting to happen, and nothing more. Hardly the best of the web.
If it's on MeFi, you can damn betcha it'll be the best gun control debate to be found anywhere on the web.

Didn't we already have an argument on this precise thing not two weeks ago? Seriously, the FPP said something about "not picking up a $10 bill off the ground at Disney Land" or something to that effect. Yes, I'm too lazy to search it.

We need to get them arguing about Christianity, too. But how? I think one of us should plant a comment in that thread about shoot first, ask questions later being one of the "lost sermons" delivered by Christ. Then we'll see some smackdown action.

bh's strange framing aside, it's a double-post, and a lame one at that. A teensy Reuters story noting that the governor just signed a previously passed - and previously discussed - bill into law is hardly worthy of another post on the same subject.

Nah... that couldn't be found in the teachings of Christ, but it could be part of "Church tradition", I can't be bothered to check.

The next person who uses the term "best of the web" will be shot. Really, please, it is stupid. It sounds like it means something, but it doesn't.

It refers verbatim to MetaFilter's early mission; in that way, it means something. I agree that it has gone stale and should be avoided now.

Best of the Web depends on which bug looks tastier to the spider, assuming said spider actually catches more than one food item in it's web. I once found a big golden orb weaver in my yard between two shrubs. I picked up a grasshopper and a cricket and tossed them into the web. It seemed to hesitate for a second but then it went after the grasshopper. Bigger, meatier? Tastier? I don't know. But I came back ten minutes later and the cricket was wrapped up too. Spiders don't waste food.

Taking "best of the web" seriously these days is like using "gay" when one means happy or "queer" when one merely means strange...

Spiders don't waste food.
If you feed them enough, even spiders will start ignoring the extra food.

Is it just me or does the word "asshole" remind you of my unattractive, alcoholic uncle Gary?

[Not trying to troll, shmegegge, but I looked at [!]'s brief posting history, and none of it is useful. Then again, maybe it's a sock puppet for Matt, who has embarked on a kid-friendly user education campaign. Will he sing?]

I think it's a clever way to make a point, and it's not like he's been going around doing it to every single callout. Hell, there've been how many callouts in the past two days? and he showed up in one. Plus, it is useful, if you think the flags are a better way of doing things than MeTa callouts, which some people definitely do.
So, is it just not useful because you disagree? Well, which offensive acronym should I use to tell you I disagree with you?

Yeah, I can see your perspective, shmegegge. It's not a matter of agreeing or disagreeing; I just find it irritating. We disagree on this matter. Still, you're right that I was (mundanely) offensive. For that I apologize.

We lost this battle a long time ago. There are too many entrenched members churning out crap posts about pet causes, social injustices that you simply must hear all about, and otherwise using the site as their own personal soapboxes. Welcome to the new Metafilter.
