responses above pullquotes August 15, 2005 9:27 PM   Subscribe

The trippy CaptainTripps has decided he needs to post his responses above his pullquotes.

Why, in gods' many names, must some users be such dipshits when it comes to participating in a community? Not only is he breaking a community norm that I have never seen broken these past five or so years, he is actively engaging in a behaviour that makes it unlikely that he will communicate effectively..

WTF?

Anyway, the thread didn't seem like the right place to whinge, so here it is.
posted by five fresh fish at 9:31 PM on August 15, 2005

Oh, good god. Every response is posted above what he is responding to.

What a wanker.

I for one cautiously, skepticly ponder the ramifications of this new Teh H4wTn3s5 in postine style.

It certianly is hard to follow... so I guess that's a plus.

It's stupid and annoying, but does it really deserve this much vitriol?

Tripps: This is not banter & brawl </inside joke>

Yeah, CaptainTrippy is annoying, but not totally distracting from one of the more interesting discussion threads we've had lately. As a Relatively Dumb American, I'm getting better view of the Canadian side to these issues, which I will put into use when I sneak over the border next year...

Oh, and good contributions, angrybeaver, but one question: Are you Norbert or Daggett?
posted by wendell at 10:34 PM on August 15, 2005

This is way more annoying than the its/it's thing, so yes, I think the virtriol is desrved, especially when it was pointed out and he shrugged his shoulders.

Y'all just gotta check out that second link I posted. It's ... quite unlike anything I've seen before.
posted by five fresh fish at 10:52 PM on August 15, 2005

Dammit, I gotta get used to this new keyboard. As I was saying...

"...unlike anything I've seen before, even on Usenet."

Even during the worst flamefests over post-above versus post-below on the usenet, I've never seen anyone actually use post-above when they're sprinkling their comments through the pullquote.
posted by five fresh fish at 10:53 PM on August 15, 2005

"sprinkling their comments through the pullquote" just has to be a euphemism for something.
posted by Armitage Shanks at 10:57 PM on August 15, 2005

Thank you wendell. I'm not Norbert nor Daggett, no idea who they are. I'm actually quite relieved and surprised that I didn't get eviscerated for posting fairly strong comments as a newbie poster.

Captaintripps' postings are actually quite readable if one reads them from the bottom up.
posted by angrybeaver at 11:10 PM on August 15, 2005

That would be handy if people read the last comment first, and devolved back into the original FPP.
posted by Balisong at 11:18 PM on August 15, 2005

Top-posting should be a reason for banning.

Your username is a non-intentional TV Cartoon reference. (And to one of the better cartoons of the last 10 years, IMO)

I quite admire Captaintripps' unique and groundbreaking posting style, and I will seek to emulate it when the opportunity arises.

I also like to wear black socks every time I wear shorts. It's incredibly satisfying.

Nice, TQK.

Captain Tripps' posting style isn't any more (or less) irritating than people who never use punctuation or capitalization.

I think this is one of those times when you're just gonna' have to DEAL.

I disagree, I think it's far more irritating, but I don't think he should be banned or anything. I'll just add his name to the list of people whose comments I skip over.

But doesn't that suggest that you generally start at the bottom of a comment and work your way up? :P

Maybe someone should just show him the link to install Metafilthy. Or maybe that would just make it worse. Who knows. I find that by inverting my monitor his comments make more sense, but not everyone can read upside-down text.

This is just facilitating his behavior. In the addiction community, the term is "codependency".

fff's second link is so barking it makes my brain hurt. My primitive aggression is off the scale at the wilful chodder.

Top posting is teh suck. and I don't give a shit if he does it everywhere else, because I'm sure we have people here who don't use English IRL, or write right-to-left. Jesus wept.
posted by bonaldi at 10:27 AM on August 16, 2005

pardonyou?: add that button and many people will nonetheless refuse to use it, and then we'll have ridiculous whoring over people Failing To Use The Quote Button, and the good Captain will probably not change his habits regardless.

Yes.

angrybeaver writes "I'm actually quite relieved and surprised that I didn't get eviscerated for posting fairly strong comments as a newbie poster."

As long as your coherent and aren't being a fool you won't get flack here just because your a newbie.

troybob writes "it would be really cool if thread comments showed up with the newest ones on top and the oldest on the bottom..."

No, it wouldn't. It would discourage reading the previous comments before posting. And it's practically impossible to read the thread in chronological order under such presentation. I guess it's OK if you compulsively hit refresh in a thread or it on a site that receives 3 comments a day but here not so much.
