A Mefi music/radio stream of the week November 14, 2001 8:06 PM Subscribe
A Mefi music/radio stream of the week. Streaming is somewhat struggling, and I would love to know what's out there
Why does everything have to be the MeFi X? Metafilter is not a brand, it's a specific community weblog project. If you want to put together a site about music streams or anything else, do it and the world will love you for it. That's what Matt did. Stop trying to piggyback on MeFi's success and create something of your own.

whoa.... Mefi X sounds really cool. like a comic book team or something.... of mutants.. teenage mutants... that fight evil, prejudice, time-travelling assholes, all while trying to get along with each other. yes, that's exactly what i feel like i'm doing when i'm at mefi/meta...

How about a MeFi recommends list? Let people nominate media in a specific number of categories (book, CD, music stream, movie) and let others vote +/- on what they like that week, and run the top one somewhere on the front page (maybe below the sideblog?) along with a list of the top five submissions for that week?

That's really all I was suggesting. We'll put Salon out of business even faster!

I think the argument against what rodii feels is that I, ParisParamus don't have the time; and (2) MH seeming invites feature suggestions. OK?

Actually what rodii is saying is perfectly fine. I pretty much said the same thing myself in regards to someone else's idea in another thread.
I choose to code new things I find interesting. The ones that are too much work, anyone can code, but always keep in mind if someone sees a good idea here and feels like doing something themselves, I'd be fine with it, and link MetaFilter to it if need be.

No MetaFGilt? No MetaFilter Hemp 100s? No MetFilter I.P.A.? No tshirts, phonecards, cabernet sauvigon, canned smoked trout in garlic? No MetaFilter Kay ISP to ISP pyramid cosmetic sales? No Waiting For Godot meets the Greyhound Bus Lines waiting room MetaTalk sit-com ?

From my vantage point, a MeFi recommends list would be both interesting and fun. If time permits, it would be an excellent thing to have. And I would participate with good intentions.

It might even "pay for itself" (server) in people clicking less on Mefi itself, and posting things "already discovered."

I can't shake the feeling that someone somewhere suggested this exact same thing recently and got almost no concrete feedback on the idea.......
Anyone seen that FedEx commerical where the low-level employee suggests to the rest of the boardroom that Fedex should offer certain features on their website to improve its function. No one says a word. Then the CEO steps in and suggests the exact same thing, only gives a little hand gesture afterward, and everyone chimes in, "Great idea, great idea!!".

No Waiting For Godot meets the Greyhound Bus Lines waiting room MetaTalk sit-com ?
Well, OK, there could be a Waiting For Godot meets the Greyhound Bus Lines waiting room MetaTalk sit-com. Just this once.
Seriously, if Matt's thinks it sounds fun, then it's cool--because he's willing to put some energy into it. I think my point stands. I know y'all value this community--so do I--but not everything that grows out of it has to be part of the MetaFilter family of stores, y'know?
In fact, to take it one step further, one solution to the MeFi-everything-to-everybody problem is to start doing spinoffs. As an advocate of returning MeFi to it's "core competency" (community weblog) I'd be happy if other high-quality, but different projects came out of the swirling vortex of energy that MeFi is turning into, like the book discussion. I think this community has the potential to do great things. I just don't see them being added to the "functionality" of MeFi proper.
Paris's point about draining load from Mama MeFi is an excellent example of the benefits of this approach, in my opinion.

Karl, a few people have mentioned the same idea to me several times over the past few months, and I do vaguely remember reading yours, sorry for not linking back to it.

Nah, I was kind of kidding, no need to link back to it. I should've assumed I wasn't the only one with the idea. I'd just wanted to get feedback. Also, I couldn't resist the Fedex reference.

Good start for a book list from some members already. (dont know if this is considered inappropriate "self link", just see member book recommendations)

P.S. I might be interested in circulating a kind of e-mail of links; sort of the way Kindall does MefiProjets....just a thought.

I'm open to doing a weekly mefi-music e-mail, like the one i already do for new Web projects. Basically the idea is you'd provide artist and album name and a 50-100 word capsule review. Might even open it up to things like concerts, streams, etc.
Same with books, I'll pop in over on that thread.

If Paris wants to actually compile it, I'd be happy to do the infrastructure, i.e. handling sign-ups and whatnot.
