MetaFilter sidebar available for browsers. December 27, 2000 7:47 PM Subscribe
New Feature: MetaFilter sidebar for win/IE and Mozilla.
Weird thing in IE5.5: when you spawn a new window with Ctrl+N, it changes back to your silly default search page.

The blockquote in the Dec 26th post #4948 appears as one word per line in my sidebard on Ie 5.5 at 1024x768 maximised window.
Apart from that, it's really handy.

yeah the blockquotes kind of suck, but I've found that it makes for some really quick reading of stories and comment threads.

Maybe the Metafilter logo at the sidebar could link to metafilter.com ?

I think the sidebar might be able to benefit from a refresh tag. It would be nice to keep the MeFi sidebar box in your window for the majority of the day, and have it refresh itself every so often so you catchthe new stuff . . .

Christian, you can reload it when you like and as much as you like. When you're in the sidebar area, press F5, or right-click and select Refresh.
I hate it when a page automatically refreshes by itself. Where's the respect to the user? I'll refresh it, when I want to, mister. [ generally speaking, and not referring to mister Haughey:) ].

I do not understand.
Do I need to leave the install.mefi link in my toolbar, to get the sidebar to come back?

nope. crackpipe, if you're on IE, just drag the link to your links bar.
It will look like this if you do it right (arrow added for clarification).

oh, ok. i didn't check out the page that lists the requirements...
unrelated... can metatalk be changed so that the number of new comments is listed on the page listing the recent threads (as happens in metafilter)? i.e. "15 comments (1 new)" i know i can tell which have new comments by the order of the threads, but i guess i'd like it to appear MeFi-ish.

I think I'm going to change metatalk to be flat, like metafilter, but with categories shown in the small type, and category pages which will remain as is. So going to the root of metatalk will bring up a page that looks like metafilter, with all threads in all categories, listed by date posted. You'll be able to access threads directly off the front page, and see all other categories or a single category, from that front page.

kchristidis, i do suppose it's a matter of opinion.
an option to have it auto-refresh might be nice. something in user-prefs, perhaps?
i personally would rather it auto refresh every five minutes. I like my email to check itself and tell me when I have new mail, rather than checking it manually every five minutes. i think it'd be a nice feature for the sidebar as well.

Those who use Mac Internet Explorer can simply use the built-in Page Holder. Surf to www.metafilter.com/bar, then click the Add button in the Page Holder, then you can add it to your Page Holder Favorites. No fancy JavaScript needed.

Christian, I do believe it's a matter of opinion. You are absolutely right about that and about that option-in-the-user-prefs suggestion.
But that auto-check-my-email example is totally off topic.

Matt, the sidebar is great ..... but ......... The links off-site appear in my sidebar window, not the mainframe. Strangely, the links to the comments appear in the mainframe. I am running NS6 on RH Linux 6.x

Off-site in all cases (ie, you click a link from an in-thread post and the target is the sidebar), or in thread headers?
If in thread headers, are your user settings set to open links in a new window, or a current window?
It sounds like you're opening them in the current window, the current window being the sidebar.
Either that or I have absolutely no idea about the functionality of the sidebar, and am just talking out of my ass again. They're both likely possible outcomes in my world.

Great!
Can I request (in addition to gluechunk's request about seeing the number of new comments on a post) having the ability to see who posted the thread?
I know it's supposed to be compact and everything so maybe you could put any extra info like this in the TITLE tag of the link so it will only pop up when the mouse is over it (e.g. like this, move your mouse over the link to see it.)
