I want to thank taz for continuing to maintain the Best Of Metafilter posts and sidebars, and specifically call out the November music round-up. It's splendid, thank you!
Could we see more "Best Of" in the "Best Of" section on the front page?
Over the last several years, the "Best Of" section seems to have become more of a "news" section, promoting podcast episodes as well as community and limited time events. There used to be much more of a focus on highlighting fantastic comments and interesting under-the-radar threads, across all the subsites, and I miss that. [more inside]
Best Metafilter posts for outsiders?
I have, over the years, tried to convince IRL friends of the awesomeness of metafilter. But getting them interested is daunting- there is so much history and culture here. Any given day the front page posts are good; but if you're not familiar with the site, can seem like just a collection of links with discussion.
So what threads/posts/discussions do you use to really show off metafilter to people unfamiliar with it? Are there any standout posts you use time and again to people unfamiliar with metafilter? This isn't the best metafilter posts, exactly, as some of the best posts jusdged by mefites may be too culturally specific to hook someone on the outside looking in. [more inside]

I have noticed the most excellent regular updates to the front page sidebar (and bestof subsite) and just wanted to say GREAT JOB! Those posts really help me better enjoy all the cool stuff on MeFi that I might otherwise be missing. Thank you so much for keeping that thing full of fun new tidbits to read. It's like the best of the best of the web!

Sidebar Drought
There hasn't been a sidebar post of a non-administrative nature in over a month. Are we flagging fewer posts? Are the moderators occupied with something more urgent? Is the sidebar deprecated in favor of the best-of blog? Has the content quality gone down? Something else? I look at the sidebar regularly and would appreciate seeing new content there.

Maybe it's just my love of ἀρετή, but to me, the best thing about the end of the year is the best-of-year lists. I can't help it! I love it when professionals and friends start reeling off their picks of excellence in a Gregorian-calendrically-delimited fashion. Could we have just one place where Mefites get to say what were the best albums, books, movies, poems, gadgets, concerts, political events, celebrity pratfalls, Supreme Court opinions, and websites of 2008? I'm missing the inclusion of noteworthy posts/comments on the sideblog (it's been a couple months since a non-"site news" tidbit). Is it on its way out as a "super bump" or has the community just been that uninteresting?

"Best of" link borked?
FYI, the "Best of" link is a little borked. I'm seeing no winners for Aug 10th, and two winners for Aug 9th, with a ton of runners up on the 9th.

On the Best Of page I'm seeing two winners & four runners up for August 5th, with one winner & one runner up for August 6th. Is the page borked, or do the number of winners & near winners change depending on the value of the day's posts?

There's a small marker at the end of the post noting the winners and the runner ups for each day (we'll pick three good ones, and one winner from that). So far, no one is putting their paypal info in their profile, so I haven't sent out one red cent, so get to updatin' your profile already (the paypal info isn't displayed anywhere on the site).

Best of MeFi
Best of MeFi, would it be possible to revive it? Matt pointed out it was too much work to do it daily, and he already puts in way too much time and effort running this place. Perhaps it would be better if it was a weekly or a bi-weekly email, with a volunteer guest editor picking the threads. What do you think?

I was thinking of doing a list of "best of" threads for metafilter, on the archives page. Do you recall any of the best threads that meet the following criteria? If so, post them here as a comment.

prisions: (among the 5 or 6 in recent memory there must be one or two good ones)

huge news threads: (the biggest kaycee one, the seattle earthquake, and the first WTC one?)
good audience participation threads:
good weird finds? best thing for $30 threads? Just plain good threads that don't meet any of the above criteria?

I have selected the option to recieve the wonderful new best of email, but the option does not stay ticked and i haven't recieved any emails. Any ideas ?
