Google Reader shuts down
in two weeks. Several alternatives
capable of importing your subscription lists and starred items (exportable via Google Takeout
) have popped up since the closure announcement, and that's OK. But there's one highly valuable aspect of Reader nobody can replicate and that will soon be lost forever: Reader's vast archive of cached feed data. Here's how to save it all. [more inside]

is what I see visiting AskMe. Attempting to log in returns a Forbidden
error page. What up?

Should the MeFi complex permanently cache links? Is it legal?
I recently desired to access some link I had added as a comment. My comment included a link to a PDF of testicle size
. However when I now follow the chain the PDF has been removed.
Why was it removed? Either because the link became so popular that somebody figured they could make money off of it, maybe generated by my linking to it, or because of space limitations or reorganizations on the server. Anyway the link and its content have now evaporated and only maybe can I find a new link to it.
The cost/gigabite is now so low that it seems the MeFi complex could cache every link added. As long as the cache was not exposed to the outside to allow google searches (and similar traffic).
If some linked page was once put in the public domain does that mean that once it is removed it is no longer in the public domain?

Why doesn't my question show up directly at ask.metafilter.com? Did they change their policy? How do I get my question to show up at the main site.

For a moment, I was logged on as another user (darthduckie ? sp) It happened on AskMe, but when I came here, I was lobstah again. I didn't try to post as that user, so I'm not sure how deeply I was logged in. Does this happen much?

Why is Metafilter "taking a massage" when I try to view the page on Firefox, but works perfectly fine when I view it in Internet Explorer? I should add that before this morning, Metafilter always worked fine in Firefox. And, despite MeFi's problems, AskMe and MeTa are working fine in Firefox right now.

The top three links on this page
do not appear on the main page, despite not being deleted. It seems that a cached copy of the front page has gotten stuck somewhere.

I posted a new question to AskMeFi this morning, and after hitting submit, I was taken directly back to the main
page, where my question wasn't listed. I tried going back in to post
, but it said I'd already asked my question for the week. To be sure, I logged out and back in, and my question still didn't show up, and I couldn't re-ask it. What happened?

Everytime I view a MeFi/MeTa/AskMe page, it brings me to the first time I viewed the page that day. I can reload the page and see new posts and/or comments, but if I leave that page everytime I go back it displays the first load of the page, not even the most recently viewed version. [MI]

When you're previewing a question in AskMeFi, it tells you to hit back on your browser to tweak the question. When you do, the initial text you wrote no longer appears in the box. (Or is this just me?)

Dear Matt: given that most people here use IE, when will you modernize the MetaTalk posting page? You've known for ages that anyone hitting the "Back" button to edit their post will lose everything because of IE browser settings.
When will it be as easy as the MetaFilter one? How is someone who knows no HTML supposed to post to MetaTalk with the appropriate links, bold and italic emphases and whatever?

When I wanted to do a search to find out if someone had linked to a given site in a FPP yet, I decided to try something different. I went to old google
and put in this URL
, which was the link in the most popular FPP
of the day exactly two weeks ago, as a "who link's to you?"
Shouldn't google have indexed the thread
, then, since it
links back to the original article? Strange, that it doesn't do this for a link and lenghty thread on a topic that will have serious implications for everyone on the internet, specifically Americans? Has google dropped the ball? Is this all just a bunch of Tom-Foolery

Disappearing comments in Netscape 4.78
: when I post a comment to MeFi, it doesn't appear until I force the page to reload. When I post a comment to MeTa, it disappears completely! Obviously, I'm posting this with a different browser.

I'm using IE5 on a Win 98 machine, and when I finish reading a thread and hit backspace to return to the front page, I'm plopped back in time to November 17, rather than the top of the thread (I view chronologically). I deleted all my Temporary Internet files, which I thought would fix it, but it's still happening. Ideas?

I noticed recently that now when I hit the back key after posting and get to the original thread screen, I don't see my new post there without reloading. In the past, it updated automatically, and "backing up" to it would find it already updated. Struck me as interesting, and I wonder if this was an intentional change or a byproduct of some other change?

Whenever I have visited MeFi index.html today, and I am not logged in, I only see posts up to about 10 a.m. today (11/6). (I use a lot of public machines over the course of the day, so that's why I'm never logged in. It's also why I'm sure it's not a cache issue.)

There's a little image (right_banner.gif) at thet top right corner of every page that's not loading for me. It's not broken, it's just not loading. I don't know if I've ever even noticed it before. Is it showing up for anyone else?

the past couple of days I have been having a problem when i hit the back button out of a thread, to the home page. It sends me to the home page, but to midway through October 1. The post about depression. It seems sort of random, but it keeps happening to me.
Is this happening to anyone else?

IE5.5, Win98. My Comments has not appeared in the dropdown menu for a couple of days. Yes, I'm logged in. I deleted internet cache & cookies earlier in the week, but was careful to keep MeFi cookies. Is it possible I accidently deleted it? If so, shouldn't new comments I've made bring the feature back? Can't figure it out, but as a wise man once said: There are no stupid questions, only stupid people.
